Amsterdam, The Netherlands – April 7, 2008 – Medialab, the world’s leading visual faceted search platform for libraries, celebrated the successful launch of My Discoveries at Croydon College in London, England.
Staff from twenty three public and academic libraries attended a special event to learn about My Discoveries, the new Social Library Experience in AquaBrowser at Croydon College. Croydon College, the first library in the U.K. to implement AquaBrowser Library, is also the first library is the U.K. to launch My Discoveries. Amsterdam Public Library in The Netherlands went live with My Discoveries earlier this year. The event was organized by the UK office of Infor (an AquaBrowser distributor) for organizing the event.
My Discoveries allows users to contribute their own knowledge and opinions on library materials by tagging and reviewing them. Boaz Leskes, Manager of Application Development at Medialab, presented the My Discoveries program at the event, after which attendees test drove the new product themselves. Mr. Leskes commented "I was very happy to be able to attend the launch of My Discoveries at Croydon College. Having live sites in two different countries sharing community contributed content is exciting. I'm very curious to see how students of Croydon College and the people of Amsterdam collaborate in contributing to each others libraries."
Thomas Butler, Library Operations Manager at Croydon College reflected "The list functionality is revolutionizing the way we handle reading lists from departments. Instead of creating web pages for each list, linking them back to the catalogue and manually updating them, now we can create the lists and new editions automatically display in the lists. Students enter the name of their course, and get instant access to all the resources off of their reading lists with significantly less work required by the library staff to get it all working."
My Discoveries contributes to AquaBrowser’s mission to assist the library in its role as the epicenter of knowledge within the community. By allowing users to comment on materials, the catalogue becomes a rich resource for the community. Users can choose to keep their tags & lists private or in true Web 2.0 spirit, they can be shared with the public for the benefit of all virtual AquaBrowser users and librarians. Through this network, My Discoveries is creating a global community for AquaBrowser users worldwide.
Libraries can choose to pre-populate their My Discoveries with the 21 million tags already contributed through LibraryThing. This seeds the catalogue and most important, gives users the comfort of not having to be the first to tag material. By integrating the data from LibraryThing into My Discoveries, libraries have the richest social library content in the world to start out with.
