Blacksburg, Virginia, U.S.A.—VTLS Inc. announces that the Swiss National Library (Bern) has installed the VTLS integrated library automation software, which runs on a Hewlett-Packard 3000 Series 992/100 DX computer under the MPE/iX operating system and supports 80 microcomputers. The SNL is the eighth national library to automate with VTLS.

In addition to the basic VTLS software package consisting of 10 subsystems, the Swiss National Library will be implementing the Document Delivery and the Journal Indexing subsystems as well as the client-server-based Acquisitions and Fund Accounting System, Intelligent Workstation and Cataloging Enhancer. Also, it has purchased the multimedia VTLS InfoStationTm. Further, VTLS' union catalog software will be used to manage the various automated systems in Switzerland that need to link to the Union Catalog, which the National Library maintains.

As Switzerland is a quadrilingual country, the National Library will be using a version of VTLS that supports French, German, Italian and English.

Since its founding in 1895, the Swiss National Library has been responsible for the preservation and conservation of Helvetica, i.e.„ the collection of any literature produced in Switzerland, written by Swiss authors or published about Switzerland. Before 1894, Swiss literature was collected by various institutions around the country. As the National Library, the SNL is also responsible for producing the national bibliography called Livre Suisse. VTLS will be automating this bibliography with the help of VTLS' agent SWS SoftWare Systems AG in Switzerland.

Today, the National Library houses more than 2.2 million monographs; 381,589 volumes of periodicals; 321,584 paintings, drawings and photographs; and a combined total of 97,743 musical scores, manuscripts, microforms and recordings. The titles in the Union Catalog total 5.8 million. One of the few national libraries that lends its collection, the SNL serves 7,534 patrons and has an annual circulation of more than 98,000.

Dr. Jean-Frederic Jauslin, director of the library, said that after evaluating 21 different automated systems—nine in detail against 230 criteria--the Swiss National Library chose VTLS because of the "good price/performance ratio, the integration of the software, the support capabilities, and the modern approach to multimedia techniques."

VTLS President Vinod Chachra noted that the Swiss National Library is the first major library to require multimedia capabilities as an integral part of their integrated system procurement. "We look forward to providing leading edge technology to the Swiss National Library and becoming partners with them to build a distributed national information resource for Switzerland," said Dr. Chachra. "The staff at VTLS are thrilled at the prospect of spending time in the scenic mountains of Switzerland."

VTLS Inc. is an international software company with head offices in Blacksburg, Virginia, U.S.A. It specializes in library automation and provides an integrated solution to all aspects of library operations for more than 260 customers worldwide.
