ATHENS, OH - February 12, 2008 - LibLime, the leader in open-source solutions for libraries announced today that MassCat--a resource sharing network for over 100 libraries in Massachusetts--has selected the Koha ZOOM for their next integrated library system (ILS) and union catalog.
LibLime, the leader in open-source solutions for libraries announced today that MassCat--a resource sharing network for over 100 libraries in Massachusetts--has selected the Koha ZOOM for their next integrated library system (ILS) and union catalog.
MassCat has selected the hosted Koha ZOOM solution, wherein the installation will be hosted at one of LibLime's carrier-class data centers. LibLime will be providing MassCat with software installation, data migration, on-site training, and ongoing support services.
"Since LibLime will be hosting our database on their servers, we will not need to worry about having to purchase, store and run our own servers and network," says Nora Blake, Manager of MassCat. "It will allow us to focus more of our time and effort on training, member relations and system development."
Nora says that Koha's open-source platform and development model is a primary reason that MassCat chose the system: "One of the biggest reasons MassCat chose Koha ZOOM was because it is an open-source system. We like the idea that we can directly contribute to the development of the system and that our development decisions will actually have a more immediate impact on our library users than they would if we were attempting to convince a proprietary system vendor to put our needs before those of another customer. We are also pleased that any development that we decide to sponsor will contributed back to the rest of the community of Koha users so that they can benefit as well. Development won’t just be 'quick fixes' that are made just for us – everyone will grow together."
"We really like the robust searching capabilities of the system. Search results make sense related to the terms used to search with!" says Nora. She adds: "We also like the features that library users can take advantage of from their own accounts and we believe the clientele of our member libraries will also enjoy having the ability to do more and more easily manage their library accounts."
MassCat is the fifth US consortium to select LibLime's Koha ZOOM in the last six months. "We've found that every consortia has a different definition of the word and slightly different approach to resource sharing," says Joshua Ferraro, LibLime's CEO. "Koha offers a flexible platform for addressing the needs of some consortia; a platform that does not require that all libraries in a consortia switch to the same ILS in order to share resources."
LibLime is the global leader in open-source solutions for libraries, with a mission to make open source accessible to libraries. Rather than sell software licenses for static, hard-to-customize software products, LibLime educates libraries about the benefits of open source, enabling them to make choices about how best to provide their communities and staff with better technology services. LibLime then facilitates implementation of open-source in libraries by providing outstanding development, customization, support and training solutions--solutions tailored to each library's needs.
