Library software review [Fall 1996]

Abstract: The Ovid searching software provides a sophisticated interface for searching and manipulating output from commercial bibliographic databases. Its sophistication shows in three areas: mapping to thesaurus terms, manipulation of output, and configuration of system settings. The integration of thesaurus mappings into subject searching directs a user to broader than, narrower than, or relevant terms in the controlled vocabulary for a given database. Search results can be manipulated for output in two ways: by varying the fields to be printed, and by allowing a number of options for output (e-mail, FTP, downloading). Users can also customize numerous system configurations, such as the format for printing or display, file save options, and other system default settings.
