November 14, 2007 -- Emeryville, CA. Innovative announced today that Naperville Public Library, the top library of its size according to Hennen's American Public Library Ratings, has selected the Millennium integrated library technology platform and the Encore discovery services platform. Located 30 miles west of Chicago, the Library serves a community of 142,000 from three buildings and circulates 4.4 million items annually. Innovative's tools will streamline staff work and will make searching the library's print and electronic resources on the Web easier for its community.
"We wanted to move forward with 'Library 2.0' features and Encore will help us move in this direction with features like the tag cloud," says Deputy Director Julie Rothenfluh. "People are looking to do information discovery online and this is a way to reach out to them and demonstrate the value of the library in their lives and the community. We have three buildings and we call our web presence our 'fourth building.' As we are nearing construction of our parking facilities, the new technologies are our opportunity to make our website better and install Millennium and Encore."
In addition to print books, Encore will retrieve results from the Library's 50 subscription-database packages from a single user search. "Usage of our databases has been increasing over the years but there's still much room for greater awareness among our community," says Rothenfluh. "Bringing in federated-search results to Encore will make discovery of e-information more integral to the searching process." The Library has selected Innovative's Research Pro as their federated-search engine.
Encore also provides a "suggestions" feature that offers items related to patron searches. In addition, a faceted search feature allows users to refine a search by location, author/subject, date of publication, and more without starting a new search or building a complex query of the library's catalog.
Established Track Record
Library staff were also seeking just the right company to meet their technology challenges. Says: Rothenfluh: "Innovative is a stable company with an established track record with public libraries. We liked that they have many librarians on their staff and could see in Millennium that they understand how we as librarians think and the workflows that make sense to us."
Top Technology for a Top Library
In 2006, Naperville Public Library was named number one in Hennen's American Public Library Ratings among libraries serving a community of 100,000 to 249,000. In fact, the library has held this distinction for eight years—longer than any other library of any size. Says Rothenfluh: "We owe our high rating to our vision of service and the energies of our user community. The new Innovative technologies are a way to improve service and help keep us number one."
