Abstract: Innovative announced that Cairo University in Egypt has selected the Millennium integrated library technology platform.

August 17, 2007 Emeryville, CA—Innovative announced today that Cairo University (Egypt) has selected the Millennium integrated library technology platform. Founded 100 years ago, Cairo University is a major university in Egypt and the Middle East and its technological developments—including various automation projects such as the Millennium implementation—will serve as a model for other institutions in the region.

Cairo University Libraries' mission is to provide support services for teaching and research while meeting the challenge of a projected 50% increase of student population over the next five years, improving efficiency, and promoting information-technology literacy. For these reasons, the University's administration sought a library automation system that would be state-of-the-art, highly functional, and centralized.

In addition, the new library system would need to manage the collections of all Cairo University's libraries and information centers, which currently include 1 million book titles, over 3,500 serials, and 170,000 items in additional formats. It would also have to be robust enough to serve 90 catalogers and 90 circulation staff members, as well as thousands of people using it simultaneously on campus and through the web.

"A committee at Cairo University examined the top library technology products commercially available," says Dr. Mahmoud T. El-Hadidi, member of the committee and IT Advisor to the University President. "It found that Millennium met the committee's technical specifications and requirements. In particular, its user-friendly interface, its proven support for Arabic language and Unicode, its opportunities for integration with Student Information Systems, and its support of the latest information standards all convinced the Committee that Millennium was the most promising candidate."

"Innovative acknowledges the value of such a large and prestigious University as a partner," says Maryvonne Enjolras, Vice President of Sales for Europe, Africa, and the Middle East. "With this selection, Innovative extends its commitment to provide dependable and comprehensive technology solutions for libraries in the region."

As part of its growth plan, the University Administration will build a fully modern central library facility. The current Central Library building was inaugurated in 1933.
