Seattle, WA – May 17, 2007. Serials Solutions, a business unit of ProQuest CSA, has announced that the company has expanded its cataloging reach with the addition of National Library of Medicine (NLM) MARC records to its comprehensive knowledgebase. Serials Solutions now offers NLM records as a free enhancement to the Serials Solutions 360 MARC Updates service.
NLM records enable patrons to search for medical e-resources within their library's OPAC using specialized medical terminology and vocabulary. Subscribing libraries now have the ability to choose from NLM records, CONSER records, and Serials Solutions Original Records, and rank them according to their preference. For example, a subscriber can now elect to receive an NLM record in its MARC report over a CONSER record. If no NLM record is available, then the client will receive the CONSER record or Serials Solutions record.
"Having NLM MARC records in our knowledgebase also provides additional metadata to our authority records, which further enhances our Serials Solutions AMS and 360 Link products," says Peter McCracken, co-founder of Serials Solutions, "For example, if a CONSER record is missing an ISSN and the NLM record has one, the ISSN field will be populated when Serials Solutions displays journal metadata, regardless of which record the subscriber receives."
Adding NLM records also means more authority data is available within the Serials Solutions knowledgebase. Libraries that choose to receive CONSER records as their primary records can add NLM records as additional delivery option, which will increase coverage when no CONSER records or Serials Solutions Original records are available.
