ATHENS, OH –February 14, 2007– LibLime, the leader in open-source solutions for libraries, announced today that the Hartland Public Library in Maine has selected LibLime's Koha Classic Hosted package to replace their DOS-based integrated library system (ILS). Koha is the first and most mature open-source ILS.
Koha will enable Hartland to jump from 'an antiquated locally-developed DOS-based circulation system' to an accessible web-based system with great self-service options. Head Librarian John Clark says the new Koha system will be "a huge public relations boost" for his library.
After eight years experience supporting and using proprietary software, John wanted a system with the option to customize, but without IT overhead. That's why he chose LibLime's Koha Classic Hosted solution: "Remote hosting and off-site backup are very attractive." John also likes "having the ability to work under the hood to fix and improve things directly"-- another privilege of the open-source ILS.
"I like being ahead of the curve," says John, "and think that open systems library software has the potential to fill a very big gap in the marketplace."
Hartland is set to go live by March 2007.
Since it was first put into production in early 2000, Koha has enabled new realities of open access, affordability, and free innovation for hundreds of libraries around the world. Koha has lived up to its name, which means ‘Gift' in the Maori language of New Zealand. From the outset, many libraries understood the power of this gift. They downloaded it, they installed it, they changed it, and they contributed their solutions back to the library community.
