25th October, 2006. Birmingham, UK. Following the recent announcement of the platform partnership between Talis and Medialab Solutions, Islington Library and Cultural Services has been amongst the first to reap the rewards of this new opportunity.
The platform partnership allowed Medialab Solutions to take advantage of platform APIs to enable any library that contributes its holdings to the Talis Platform to see their catalogue via the AquaBrowser Online service.
The essence of the Talis Platform encourages a global community of users and developers to liberate their data, build and deliver new and innovative library services alongside their existing library management systems. Within hours, Islington Library and Cultural Services were able to showcase their library holdings they had shared with the Talis Platform within the rich interface of AquaBrowser Online.
Since March 2006, over 200 libraries in the UK and Ireland have shared their library data with the Talis Platform to raise the visibility of their holdings, reach beyond the boundaries of the library space, and begin pushing services out to people in the places where they are already interacting.
John Usher, ICT Development Manager at Islington Library and Cultural Services commented "Having earlier challenged Talis as to why they could not integrate AquaBrowser (or similar products) with their products, given their espousal of the 'Web 2.0', 'Library 2.0', 'Platform Approach', the biter has been bit! Because we are a contributor to the Talis Platform, and with almost no effort on our part, this impressive and different way for users of Islington libraries to discover and view items in our catalogue, appeared almost overnight. Initial response from staff sampling the service has been almost universally positive, with requests for further integration. We are pleased to be an early demonstrator of what is possible for all libraries that contribute their data to the Talis Platform."
Dave Errington, Talis CEO commented "It is encouraging to see many of our customers enthused by this initiative. Islington Library and Cultural Services have been a Talis customer for over a decade using both Talis Alto and Talis Prism. This is an exciting time for Talis as our existing customers are beginning to reap the rewards of the Talis Platform."
Bastiaan Zwaan, CEO of Medialab Solutions stated, "It is fantastic to see Talis Platform users discovering the power of AquaBrowser Online. The smooth integration and almost instant availability are great advantages. The software as a service truly means no hassle for the library customer."
