Emeryville, CA—The Mountain View Public Library has implemented Innovative's self-service library products on their wireless-enabled mobile library. Taking advantage of citywide wireless access provided by Google, the bookmobile allows patrons to check out books and register for library cards on their own through real-time access to the Millennium integrated library technology platform.
Launched in mid-July, the mobile library vehicle is equipped with two laptops outside the vehicle where users have wireless access to Millennium and the Internet. At the inaugural visit to Google, 80 employees signed up for new library cards using Innovative's Online Patron Registration product. Inside the mobile library vehicle is a laptop-enabled Millennium Self Check station, where patrons use a barcode reader and a touch-screen monitor to view their patron record and check out books.
"We're happy with Millennium Self Check because it works well in a wireless environment," says Library Services Manager Judy Humphreys. "The set-up was easy and we've customized the interface with the Library's logo. Millennium Self Check helps us maximize time spent at busy stops and patrons can get on and off the vehicle more quickly with their materials. Staff are also able to check out materials easily through Millennium circulation at a station inside the vehicle. And because the MAC addresses of our mobile library PCs have been 'white-listed' on the Google Wi-Fi® network, it's easy to make the connections."
Millennium Self Check and Online Patron Registration became available with Millennium 2005 and Millennium Silver (2004) respectively.
