In a radical move that will shake up the library industry, Medialab Solutions, the Dutch creator of AquaBrowser Library, has now announced its latest offering: AquaBrowser Online. This service provides the latest technology in library catalog search in a completely web-based environment. There is no software to purchase and libraries get a visual, modern and intuitive website that will bring their catalog to life.
Completely moving away from the existing library software model, AquaBrowser Online is a subscription service that any library with a collection under 150,000 titles can simply sign up for and use. It provides the library with a website it can offer to patrons, using the proven AquaBrowser technology components to search and browse the catalog. There is no investment in software, set up or implementation or maintenance costs. There is also no need for the hassle of purchasing servers because everything is hosted as part of the service.
Libraries can start and stop the service at anytime, ending the legacy of complex and often long enduring contracts. Because there is no software to purchase or install, the library always has access to the very latest in AquaBrowser technology offerings. The library won't be bothered with software updating cycles.
"The AquaBrowser Online service model is founded on what businesses are doing with web-based services in many sectors outside the library industry" CEO Bastiaan Zwaan said. "This isn't just the future, this is already happening. Our main goal is to give smaller-budgeted libraries the opportunity to get the best of AquaBrowser Library, and to do it in the most-efficient manner for everyone. At the same time, within the AquaBrowser Online service concept, those smaller libraries no longer have the hassle of software installation and server configuration. Libraries just pay a small monthly fee for the service, we do the rest."
What's more is that it is so easy. The library can prepare their data to be indexed ahead of time using existing MARC exporting standards (all of today's modern ILS systems must comply with that), and after that there's really nothing more to it. Once the website is live, which takes a very little time, new catalog data will fully automatically be updated and indexed over night so there is never an interruption in service for the library patron.
All new AquaBrowser Online customers will receive a free 30 day trial. The library has the control to add logos and changes colors to adapt the look and feel to their own library website. An added feature will be a special search box that can be placed anywhere on the library's existing site that will perfectly link with the AquaBrowser Online website.
Like this unique service, the launch itself is quite unique as well. In order for the library customers to truly have a say in the final service, Medialab has decided to introduce AquaBrowser Online in development. Anyone can visit http://www.aquabrowseronline.com and see what it is all about. The final service will be heavily influenced by the user feedback given on this site. There will be features, links and details added as development continues until the service starts up officially. Until then, Medialab Solutions' own CEO Bastiaan Zwaan will be handling the incoming feedback directly, taking a fully hands-on approach to finishing the new vision and service: "I encourage all library information professionals, directors, librarians and IT staff to send their feedback directly to me!"
AquaBrowser Library is still readily available for any library with collections above 150,000 titles or with more specific needs and desires for their search implementation such as the integration of additional sources.
