Big changes in library system selection criteria

Abstract: When libraries select a new (or replacement) library automation system today, the greatest emphasis is placed on how easy (friendly) the user interface is to operate, and on how much end-user functionality is available. Not all that long ago, systems were judged almost exclusively on the basis of the hardware platform they used. With system stability came a shift in emphasis to operating system software and its importance in system development. Several reasons exist for the shift in emphasis to end-user issues. Globally, there has been a shift toward better service. The availability of cost-effective information resources makes accessibility a more important factor than the database-building activities of the past.
