Infor (formerly Geac Library Solutions) today presented V-spaces, a new information portal for information centers and libraries, at the IFLA World Library and Information Congress in Seoul, Korea. With V-spaces, Infor addresses the growing needs of users across the globe to find relevant and context-specific information in heterogeneous resources anywhere.
"V-spaces is a unique information portal that fundamentally alters the search experience," said Eric van Lubeek, Managing Director Infor Library Solutions. "Usability lies at the core of the V-spaces solution, enabling users to find information through a slick and highly functional interface. At the same time, V-spaces employs cutting-edge technologies to ensure that search results are context-sensitive, always up-to-date and a ‘gateway' to additional searches. Both end-users and staff will find in V-spaces an entirely new tool that eliminates confusion and consistently delivers accurate, coherent and pertinent information."
V-spaces integrates new software for federated searching, resource discovery and data enrichment. Users can access an institution's online catalog and multiple subscription databases in a single search environment and through a single query. Queries are transparently ‘enriched' through features such as Fuzzy Logic and Associative Searching, which guide users in their search and provide suggestions for alternate search terms or related topics. Institutions can group target databases by type or subject, thus providing users with a single access point to relevant information resources. Through the integration of the Vlink OpenURL Resolver, each search result may constitute the starting-point of a new search, providing automatic links to Internet sites and additional databases.
Besides tools that facilitate a seamless "discover and find" search process, V-spaces enables users to customize the interface according to their specific requirements and needs. In addition, when used by libraries, V-spaces offers support for traditional circulation functions such as online reservations, renewals, payments etc. Users can also rate and review books, define RSS News Feeds and store and email selected records.
The V-spaces technology utilizes "Connectors", which enable the flawless and transparent connection with the individual information resources. The V-spaces Connectors regulate all technical aspects of the connection process, ranging from the selection of the search protocol, to authorization, the broadcasting of the search, the receipt of results and the translation of formats.
V-spaces is available as a stand-alone product and can also be integrated in Infor's Vubis Smart Library Automation System. For more information, visit www.v-spaces.com
