HUNTSVILLE, Ala., July 25, 2006 - SirsiDynix, the global leader in strategic technology solutions for libraries, announced today that Delaware school and public libraries will pilot SirsiDynix SchoolRooms, an online exploration, discovery and learning portal for K-12 students, teachers and parents. The pilot launch of SchoolRooms will take place at Sussex Technical High School, in Georgetown, Del., and in Sussex County public libraries in the fall of 2006. The project is spearheaded by the Delaware Division of Libraries with support from the Governor's Task Force on School Libraries.
SchoolRooms provides a single, student-friendly interface to high-quality content from the school library's catalog, other public library catalogs, online databases, e-content from publishers, popular Internet search engine results and teacher-selected Web sites. Developed by SirsiDynix in collaboration with INFOhio, the Information Network for Ohio Schools, SchoolRooms is designed to meet both U.S. and state education standards.
Based on the SirsiDynix Rooms(tm) content management platform, SchoolRooms promotes exploration, discovery and learning to supplement any curriculum. Content is presented in virtual rooms that help students discover information, provide educators with access to quality materials and enable parents to find appropriate resources for improving their children's education.
"The strength of SchoolRooms is its organization of all types of information by school subject standards into a seamless interface," said Annie Norman, director and state librarian of Delaware Division of Libraries / State Library. "Recently, Dr. Ross Todd of Rutgers University conducted a study of Delaware's school libraries and advised us to create a seamless information landscape. The SchoolRooms pilot is a perfect solution to this recommendation, creating an environment where students can apply what they learn about school library resources to their information seeking at home or in the public library.
"Delaware students, teachers and parents will all benefit from SchoolRooms because the information will be organized in a more intuitive way, based on how they will use it. With the implementation of SchoolRooms, we expect that the use of library resources will increase and that libraries will make a greater, more positive impact on educational outcomes," added Norman.
Angus Carroll, SirsiDynix chief marketing officer, said, "At SirsiDynix, we are partnering with our clients to create a future in which libraries play a more strategic role within their communities - bringing knowledge in all its forms to real people to meet real needs. Today's K-12 students face many challenges when looking for information, such as an overwhelming number of search results or sources of questionable quality. SirsiDynix SchoolRooms helps students make sense of the many resources at their fingertips by presenting relevant, high-quality information in context so that they can find the right information when they need it."
