The Authority for Culture, Youth, Sport and Media in Flemish-Belgium has selected AquaBrowser Library as the main platform for its search interfaces towards the Flemish central catalogue (Vlacc) and related databases.
The project to provide the Flemish public with a user friendly and value added searching and discovery interface 'www.zoeken.bibliotheek.be' is the common cornerstone in two larger programs: a new library user oriented web site 'www.bibliotheek.be' and the project to renew the central cataloguing software. Both programs are managed by the Flemish Authority and implemented by its central agency to support the public libraries in Flanders, VCOB.
AquaBrowser Library was selected because of its inventive and unique ability to answer a simple search on the various structured data in the classic library catalog with best fit results. Every query takes the richness of the cataloguing data into account. Results are presented ranked on relevance and with suggestions for further associative queries or refinements. More than with classic online catalogues the user gets an experience with relevant results without bothering about selecting an index or formulating a query.
AquaBrowser Library solution allows the VCOB implementation team to disconnect the complexity of cataloguing, requiring a highly specialized cataloguing system, from an easy to use web presentation. Cataloguers will continue to structure and normalize data and relations between data, to register different kinds of indexation, etc. AquaBrowser makes use of these data without the end user having to wonder what index, classification or logic is behind it. AquaBrowser correlates the data and provides the end user with an enriched and relevance ranked search and discovery experience. Through AquaBrowser Library Solution search results take real advantage form the value of the catalogue and the effort of the cataloguing.
The implementation process towards a fully tuned AquaBrowser Library search solution in function of the database with about 700,000 records is successfully fast tracked over two months resulting in a beta-version today. The official release with daily data updates and adapted interfaces for youth, the visually impaired and digital information sources will be presented to the public in October 2006.
