Des Plaines, Illinois, January 19, 2006: Endeavor Information Systems, the leading provider of library management software for academic and research libraries, and Jiangsu Huiwen Software Co., the leading library system provider in China, have signed a letter of intent to form a strategic partnership for the development and marketing of digital library products to Chinese institutions. Endeavor Information Systems is part of Elsevier, a world-leading publisher of scientific, technical and medical information products and services.
Under the terms of the agreement, Endeavor will give Jiangsu Huiwen access to its full line of library management software products -- including its flagship ILS program, Voyager, and its cutting-edge ERM solution, Endeavor Meridian. Endeavor will also provide training and marketing/sales support. Jiangsu Huiwen has agreed to lead all product trials at key institutions within China and to develop local interfaces to be used in the Chinese versions of these products.
Nanjing University has already been identified as the pilot customer for the new partnership. This multi-disciplined research and teaching institution is expected to become the first of several Chinese libraries to begin implementing Endeavor products during the first quarter of 2006.
"The alliance between our two companies - both recognized leaders in our respective markets - will enable both of us to provide significant added value by creating new offerings that support the changing role of libraries," said Endeavor President and CEO Roland Dietz. "In China there exists a significant need for digital library components as well as for support of repositories and archives of varying natures. We look forward to fulfilling this need, and to the possibility of expanding our partnership to various new product modules that would capture both print and electronic resource management, disclosure and rendering."
"An increasing number of Chinese libraries are actively assessing possibilities to create digital libraries for their institutions, and we are at the start of an accelerated market development," said Huiwen President Keyi Yang . "We believe that while there are elements to this development that are the same worldwide, clearly there are many specific requirements of Chinese customers that need to be identified and addressed. Through this partnership, we hope to be better able to adapt our offerings to meet these specific needs."
"Chinese research university libraries are making rapid progress on implementing digital libraries. There's no doubt we will welcome a digital library system with leading functionalities, a strong value proposition and good local customer services. We hope our long-term partner, Huiwen Software, will bring us good luck again." Said Vice Director of Nanjing University Library, Jianmin Zheng.
As part of the partnership agreement, Huiwen will also provide local support and system localization for customers in China. The two companies plan to hold a joint seminar for customers in the coming months to discuss the specifics of the new arrangement. Details regarding date and location for the seminar will be announced within the next several weeks.
