Abstract: Polaris Library Systems announced a new service that expands its monitoring of integrated library system servers to web servers, email servers and all aspects of the library’s network, including switches, routers, firewalls and filters. The new service – SiteScan Advanced – builds on Polaris’ SiteScan system that provides round-the-clock monitoring of over 50 indicators of the health of ILS servers and alerts library staff and Polaris Library Systems’ Support when indications of a problem arise. SiteScan Advanced is ILS-independent and can be used by any library to protect the integrity of their network and their servers.

Syracuse, NY - January 17, 2006 – Polaris Library Systems, the leader in applying technology tools to enhance customer support, today announced a new service that expands its monitoring of integrated library system (ILS) servers to web servers, email servers and all aspects of the library's network, including switches, routers, firewalls and filters. The new service – SiteScan Advanced – builds on Polaris' customer-acclaimed SiteScan system that provides round-the-clock monitoring of over 50 indicators of the health of ILS servers and alerts library staff and Polaris Library Systems' Support when indications of a problem arise. SiteScan Advanced is ILS-independent and can be used by any library to protect the integrity of their network and their servers.

Polaris Library Systems is providing SiteScan Advanced through a partnership with Alternative Work Environments, Inc. AWE is a leading provider of public access, network support, and monitoring solutions for libraries.

"Polaris Library Systems pursued this partnership with AWE because we are acutely aware of how challenging it can be for many libraries to manage their complex information systems and networks," said Brad Rogers, Polaris director of customer operations. "We have had tremendous success with SiteScan, finding and addressing issues for Polaris ILS customers before they were aware they had a problem. This success has led us to expand our service to other aspects of the library's infrastructure and to make these services available to all libraries, regardless of what ILS they are using. Partnering with AWE provides the types of services libraries need in one highly affordable service package."

Rogers said that the monitoring available with SiteScan Advanced can prevent outages and reduce the severity and duration of outages. In addition to monitoring critical systems 24/7, SiteScan Advanced also provides fault, failure and problem identification; incident notification; daily, weekly and monthly reporting; and network and server performance monitoring and trending.

"With SiteScan Advanced, libraries can help prevent costly disruption to their mission-critical systems, including circulation, patron access to the online catalog, public Internet access and more," Rogers continued. "We are providing the expertise that libraries need to maintain their critical information systems, without the library having to invest in people to manage their systems and tools that can quickly become outdated."

According to one AWE library customer, AWE "knows library systems and networks" and recognizes the need to work closely with library network engineers to ensure timely and accurate monitoring of all the library's critical systems.

SiteScan Advanced is available at three different levels to support libraries' budgets and specific needs.

  • Silver Level: Enhanced monitoring of the ILS and monitoring of Internet connectivity
  • Gold Level: Same as Silver plus monitoring of the Web server and email system
  • Custom Level: Same as Gold plus can include monitoring of routers, filters, switches, firewalls and more

"AWE is very excited about the opportunity to work with Polaris Library Systems," said Karl Thornton, president of AWE. "We have been providing services to Polaris customers for over 7 years and have found that Polaris Library Systems has the same level of commitment to quality and customer satisfaction as AWE."
