Abstract: The Library Corporation''s Next Generation Library System, CARL.X, now supports non-Roman character sets in Unicode.

INWOOD, WV, August 5, 2005- The Library Corporation's (TLC) Next Generation Library System, CARL.X, now supports non-Roman character sets in Unicode.

The CARL.X Public Access Catalog supports search, retrieval, and display of Chinese, Russian, Korean, Hebrew, Greek, Arabic, Tamil, Japanese, and many other languages covered by the Unicode standard.

The CARL.X database load utility converts cataloging text from MARC-8 (including Chinese, Japanese, and Korean encoded in EACC; and other non-Roman languages such as Arabic, Hebrew, and Russian) into Unicode UTF-8 encoding, so that all data storage and manipulation activities can take advantage of the Unicode standard.

Additionally, the CARL.X cataloging module (ITS.International) is compatible with Windows input method editors (IMEs), enabling catalogers to enter and maintain non-Roman data using commonly used data entry techniques. ITS.International includes a transliteration tool that automatically generates main tags linked to 880 tags contained in the native-script text.

CARL.X is the result of a multi-year re-engineering project based on TLC's CARL.Solution, an ILS used by the busiest libraries in the world, including The National Library of Singapore and the Los Angeles Public Library.
