Abstract: Sirsi Corporation announced that Lawrence Technological University in Southfield, Michigan, has selected the Sirsi Unicorn Library Management System.

HUNTSVILLE, Ala.—April 7, 2005—Sirsi Corporation announced today that Lawrence Technological University (LTU) in Southfield, Michigan, has selected the Sirsi Unicorn Library Management System. In their search for an integrated library system with more functionality and a sophisticated graphical user interface, LTU concluded that Sirsi Unicorn offered the right blend of features and functionality. Sirsi's support of Linux was also an important deciding factor complementing LTU's movement to the Linux platform on campus. "Sirsi's exciting vision of the future, including e-reserves, virtual reference, and other third-party integration, also convinced staff that Unicorn was the best choice for a system that can grow along with LTU," said Gary Cocozzoli, director of the library.

Along with Sirsi Unicorn, LTU's suite of Sirsi products and services includes the WorkFlows staff interface, SmartPort Z39.50 cataloging utility, Academic Reserves, and Acquisitions, along with the Authority, Circulation, and Serials Controls. Cocozzoli said that the library staff is looking forward to the improved productivity that the new Java-based WorkFlows clients will bring to Unicorn's client/server applications.

He also noted that “LTU was one of the nation's first totally wireless campuses. Every undergraduate student and faculty member is issued a deluxe wireless laptop computer, so access to electronic resources both on campus and off is an essential component of the library's service. With the flexibility of Unicorn and the Web2 user interface, LTU will easily be able to custom design a specialized online catalog that fits our students' needs, integrating print and electronic books and periodicals.”

Since Sirsi is one of the first ILS vendors to have a functional NCIP application, this will simplify LTU's participation in a regional patron-initiated inter-library loan system, dubbed “MiLE” (Michigan Library Exchange). This third-party software can use NCIP to seamlessly fulfill requests among libraries in the region.
