Dynix launches Dynix Institute Upstream as professional development resource

Abstract: Dynix unveiled a semi-annual ePublication called Dynix Institute Upstream: Unexpected Ideas, Uncensored Opinions as a new service of the Dynix Institute. Dynix Institute Upstream is offered free of charge to all members of the library community.


BOSTON—January 15, 2005—Dynix, the world's leading provider of automation technologies, solutions, and services for libraries, today unveiled a semi-annual ePublication called Dynix Institute Upstream: Unexpected Ideas, Uncensored Opinions as a new service of the Dynix Institute. Dynix Institute Upstream is offered free of charge to all members of the library community and is available for immediate download at www.dynix.com/upstream.

As a professional development resource, the purpose of Dynix Institute Upstream is to connect librarians with keen insight, unique ideas, and valuable opinions from library thought leaders as they answer challenging questions in a forum where original thinking is encouraged and embraced. A different question, the same one asked to each of the contributors, provides the theme for each edition of Dynix Institute Upstream.

Dynix Institute Upstream is designed to pose thought-provoking questions regarding important issues in librarianship. Each edition will feature analysis and commentary from some of the most notable thought leaders of the library community, all past or upcoming presenters of the Dynix Institute Web Seminar Series.

“The goal of Dynix Institute Upstream is to start conversations, provoke debates, and stimulate ideas,” said Dynix Chief Operating Officer Bill Davison. “Like every aspect of the Dynix Institute, we hope it will be of service to all librarians as they seek opportunities for intellectual growth and professional development. Nearly 11,000 librarians have already benefited from our free Web seminars, and we are excited to be growing the Dynix Institute with the launch of Upstream.”

The first edition of Dynix Institute Upstream poses the question, “What emerging breakthrough or trend, currently unknown to most librarians, will have the greatest impact on the library community over the next 10 years?” Ten contributors share their responses to the question, including ALA President Carol Brey-Casiano and ALA President-Elect Michael Gorman. Other contributors include leading consultants, library directors, and library technologists.

“In these days when continuing education has become increasingly expensive and inaccessible, the Dynix Institute provides a unique and flexible approach that participants will find most enjoyable,” Brey-Casiano said. “I found my own experience as a Dynix Institute presenter to be so rewarding that I am planning to offer several webcasts during my presidential year that follow the Dynix Institute model!”

“I also encourage librarians everywhere to read the new Dynix Institute Upstream offerings for fresh perspectives from some of our most prominent library leaders,” she said.

Director of Westport Public Library Maxine Bleiweis, also a past Web seminar presenter and Dynix Institute Upstream contributor, said, “Through the free resources of the Dynix Institute, staff members who might not otherwise be able to attend quality programs can do so in the comfort of their own space. It's a very good idea and I'm proud to have participated in this service to the library community.”
