Abstract: Los Angeles Public Library has signed a new agreement with TLC for its integrated library system, CARL.Solution. The agreement is for three years, with seven one-year extensions. The library has used the CARL system since 1993.

INWOOD, WV—January 10, 2005 – Los Angeles Public Library (LAPL) has signed a new agreement with TLC for its integrated library system, CARL.Solution.

The agreement is for three years, with seven one-year extensions. The library has used the CARL system since 1993.

In the agreement, LAPL's Board of Commissioners noted that Los Angeles citizens benefited significantly from services that result from the library's partnership with TLC.

The agreement covers the purchasing of new products and services, in addition to the core ILS. LAPL has implemented Online Selections & Acquisitions, TLC's collection development and acquisitions utility, and will implement CARL.Decision, TLC's new graphical reporting tool. LAPL has also used CARL Photo Imaging™ to catalog and digitize its extensive photo collection. LAPL has under consideration TLC's new search engine technologies, RFID, and broad e-commerce functionality, including credit and debit card payment of fines and fees.

LAPL has nearly 3,000 workstations accessing CARL.Solution, and the library logs an excess of four million catalog searches a month. Library staff members have recognized CARL.Solution's ability to handle such a high number of transactions. In addition, the library has experienced no significant downtime in the past ten years.

Commented LAPL Information Technology Director Steve Newcomer: “The Los Angeles Public Library looks forward to a continued, strong relationship with TLC in developing technology-based solutions for patron services, including e-commerce applications and personalized patron interfaces to library resources. LAPL has been a leader in providing Web-based patron services and expects its partnership with TLC to enable it to maintain its leadership role in the years ahead.”

TLC serves many of the world's largest urban public libraries with its CARL product line. TLC Vice President and Denver Managing Director Patricia Culkin emphasized that TLC is proud to serve Los Angeles Public Library as both a vendor and as a development partner. She noted: “Libraries are now demanding that their ILS solutions integrate well with all the business and marketing functions of the library. Working with libraries of the size and scope of LAPL creates an ideal environment for discovering solutions that serve the whole enterprise.”
