New York, NY — December 1, 2004 — Ovid Technologies, an internationally recognized leader of electronic medical, scientific, and academic research information solutions, and MuseGlobal, Inc., the metasearch technology firm, today announced a partnership to offer academic and medical institutions as well as corporations an alternative, cost-effective federated search solution. This ASP (application service provider) packaged solution will be scalable to incorporate any range of content sources including commercially available databases, local information and internet resources. The federated search system will feature administrative tools designed to enable rapid implementation within a customer's environment. The new federated search solution is scheduled to be available within the first quarter of 2005.
Helping users improve the effectiveness and efficiency of literature searching across multiple, disparate sources, this new offering complements Ovid's rich content and proprietary search workflow tools with MuseGlobal's search technology. Designed as a single point of access to an institution's resources, the solution is customizable and scalable based on the number of database 'connectors' required. In addition, it will be hosted and maintained centrally by Ovid, thereby eliminating additional investment in resources for hardware and software maintenance and related costs for the institution.
"Ovid and MuseGlobal have partnered to create a breakthrough discovery-to-delivery federated search solution that integrates most of an institution's resources in a rapid timeframe," said Jay Chakrapani, Vice President of Software Product Management at Ovid. "In addition, our cost-effective solution offers tremendous customization options designed to meet the specific resource integration needs of each customer, whether they are a small academic institution or large pharmaceutical organization."
"We are pleased to partner with Ovid to bring an exciting alternative to the market. Ovid's keen understanding of content and end-user search needs was an ideal match with our metasearch technology expertise. Together, we're bringing to the market a highly attractive federated search tool," said Kate Noerr, CEO of MuseGlobal.
The flexibility of this new federated search solution allows each customer to create a highly customizable tool that can include branding (such as logos, style sheets), interface design (including non-standard fonts and European characters), hosting options (ASP or local), as well as the number of database 'connectors' to meet various resource needs. For example, customers requiring a fully customized, locally hosted solution can modify any aspect of the user interface to meet specialized branding requirements or end-user preferences, add database connectors for up to 1,300 resources from the MuseGlobal knowledge base, and integrate the solution with other applications such OpenURL resolvers.
The Ovid and MuseGlobal partnership underscores the increased need for a federated search solution designed and implemented with an understanding of end-user search trends. Literature researchers typically require broad, yet precision searching, with an emphasis on full text results delivered in a single, integrated environment. Today's academic and medical institutions offer a wealth of information resources, many of which have their own interfaces which create inherent challenges when a user conducts a search across these information 'silos'.
The powerful combination of a federated search tool with Ovid's OpenURL resolver, LinkSolver, further enhances Ovid's expanding product offerings tailored to meet users' needs for a seamless and continuous search experience from resource discovery to database-specific, precision searching to direct linking to the full text.
