Abstract: Dynix announced that Services documentaires multimédia inc., the premier source of cataloguing data in Canada''s French-speaking library market, will leave its current bibliographic management tool and install the Horizon Information Management System. Additionally, SDM has entered into a business relationship with Dynix designed to help both companies improve the service they provide to their respective customer bases.

PROVO, Utah—October 25, 2004—Dynix, the world's leading provider of automation technologies, solutions, and services for libraries, today announced that Services documentaires multimédia (SDM) inc., the premier source of cataloguing data in Canada's French-speaking library market, will leave its current bibliographic management tool and install the Horizon Information Management System. Additionally, SDM has entered into a business relationship with Dynix designed to help both companies improve the service they provide to their respective customer bases.

Since 1980, SDM has been using a Minisis RDBMS system, developed by the International Development Research Centre of the Canadian government, for all of its bibliographic operations, including authority control, acquisitions, and printed catalogue production.

SDM sought a new information management product in order to overcome the obsolescence of its current tool and move to a more powerful system built on state-of-the art architecture. The company conducted a thorough procurement process in which Horizon was evaluated against systems from the other major vendors active in Québec.

“Although our current system served us well over the years, SDM's growing needs and new offerings had clearly outgrown the software we've been using,” said Manager of Bibliographic Services Benoit Ferland. “We needed a system that would help us integrate processes that are currently carried out using several applications, thus streamlining our operations, increasing performance, and maximizing staff efficiency.”

In conjunction with the installation of Horizon, Dynix and SDM are entering into a mutually-beneficial business alliance that will result in an exchange of services between these two market leaders. With complementary products and areas of expertise, the partnership will leverage each company's strengths and synergies to further enhance their service offerings for the French marketplace.

As part of the alliance, Dynix will establish a business office in SDM's Montreal headquarters, enabling Dynix to further expand the service it provides to the French-Canadian market. Initially, SDM will provide Dynix with translation and linguistic services. Over the longer term, SDM will offer other human resources to extend Dynix's training and technical support operations in Québec. In exchange, Dynix will develop enhanced software functionality that further customizes Horizon to meet SDM's unique needs as a repository of bibliographic records.

“We look forward to working with SDM as both a customer and a partner,” said Dynix Chief Operating Officer Bill Davison. “The implementation of Horizon will enable SDM to more efficiently manage its important collection of bibliographic records while improving workflows for SDM staff. As well, we are very excited for the benefits our relationship with SDM will contribute to the service we provide Dynix customers in Québec.”

“A partnership with Dynix will give SDM exposure in the library marketplace worldwide,” Ferland said. “The Horizon system will allow us to improve the quality and scope of our current services, as well as enhance our workflows and operations. Dynix clearly demonstrated they could work with SDM in supporting our specific needs.”
