PROVO, Utah–October 4, 2004–Dynix, the world's leading provider of automation technologies, solutions, and services for libraries, today announced that Friendswood Public Library (Friendswood, TX), Coffey County Library (Burlington, KS), Lafayette Public Library (Lafayette, CO), Bridgeport Public Library (Bridgeport, CT), and Fairfield County Library (Winnsboro, SC) will all leave existing Dynix ILS deployments and install the Horizon Information Management System.
Friendswood Public Library had hardware that had reached its end of life and wanted to upgrade to the latest technology. Though pleased with its Dynix system of 15 years, the library decided to upgrade to Horizon for a more advanced set of features and options.
“We're excited about Horizon Information Portal,” said Director Mary Perroni. “It looks great and will be easier and faster for patrons and staff to use, and our patrons will be more comfortable working in a Windows environment.”
Perroni said she expects the upgrade to go smoothly. “Dynix is so organized about the upgrade process,” she said. “We don't have a lot of staff here, and it's good to know we have Dynix experts to identify and fix problems as we're going through the process. They've already been so helpful.”
Friendswood Public Library has been a Dynix customer since 1989. With a collection of 80,000 items and an annual circulation of 280,000, the library serves a population of 30,000 people.
A Dynix ILS customer since 1998, Coffey County Library has six branches and maintains a total collection of 173,227 items, achieving an annual circulation of 262,000. The library also serves Coffey County's elementary, middle, and high schools, which will be moving to Horizon, as well.
“We looked at other systems and received formal bids,” said System Administrator Mary Leigh Dyck, “but we found that Dynix offered the best technology and investment. We also like the company's vision for the future.”
Dyck said the library's excellent relationship with Dynix also contributed to its choice of Horizon. “The fact that Dynix understands our system and knows how to migrate our data was another important factor in our decision,” Dyck continued. “Dynix support reps still surprise me sometimes with their excellent follow-up and quick response times.”
Lafayette Public Library sought a more advanced automation system to help it meet the increased expectations of its users for a system that offered the latest in technology and patron self-service functionality.
“Our public expects the library to have Web-based services similar to those of the commercial vendors they deal with,” said Director Michele Seipp. “They want our services to have the same level of sophistication, so we needed to move to Horizon. I breathed a sigh of relief after the staff had evaluated the competition and told me they were confident that Horizon was the best system for us.”
Seipp said Horizon was also the right choice because of its ability to help the library keep pace with emerging technologies, use third-party products, and interact with other libraries. “Horizon opens up doors for coalitions and for interfacing with other libraries, book vendors, and new technologies in the future. Because of the way Horizon is written, it has the potential for doing so much more than what we can do with Dynix ILS.”
A Dynix customer since 1993, Lafayette Public Library serves a population of 25,000 with a collection of 110,000 items, maintaining an annual circulation of 380,000.
Bridgeport Public Library decided it was time for a new system when its old hardware reached its end of life. The library made the decision to move to Horizon based on the product's functionality and on a very positive history with Dynix.
“We are excited and have no qualms about moving to Horizon,” said Head of Technical Services Sylvia Boyd. “We have had fabulous support over the years, and Dynix has always been there to help us with whatever issues arise.” Boyd also said the library's circulation staff was very impressed by the circulation module in Horizon. “There is functionality there that will make their jobs easier and more efficient.”
Bridgeport Public Library consists of a main library and four branches, serving a population of 140,000 people. The library has a total collection of 500,000 items, maintains an annual circulation of 440,000, and has been a Dynix ILS customer since 1993.
A Dynix customer since 1990, Fairfield County Library serves a population of 24,000 with a collection of 84,000 items, circulating nearly 82,000 items each year. The library moved to Horizon without considering options from other vendors.
“We really were not looking to move to another vendor. We've been with Dynix for a number of years and are happy with the support we've received. Plus, we like the direction the company is headed,” said System Administrator Mike Poole. “We are excited about the expanded possibilities for staff and patrons created by moving to a client-server architecture.”
Poole added that several other South Carolina libraries that have already migrated to Horizon have been very happy with their decisions.
