DES PLAINES, ILLINOIS, Aug. 18, 2004: Endeavor Information Systems announced today the availability of the integration of Eduserv Athens, a leading single sign-on access and identity management system, and the ENCompass system for managing, searching and linking collections. Ensuring single sign-on access to multiple resources, Athens' availability through ENCompass provides end users with institutional authorization for federated searching of resources and access to the citations or full-text of those resources. An added-cost functionality, the ENCompass integration with Athens is available now with ENCompass release 3.5.
Typically in libraries, each database requires IP-based authorization for end user access, causing stop points for some researchers. With Athens, a user needs to sign-on only once – whether they are on-campus or off to gain access to multiple, authorized electronic resources. By implementing single sign-on functionality within ENCompass federated search screens, libraries can now provide end users with authorized access in the early steps of research.
“Eduserv Athens is delighted that Endeavor has taken advantage of the seamless authentication capabilities of Athens to provide real benefits to the end users of its exciting new system, ENCompass,” said Lyn Norris, Eduserv Athens product manager.
“End users are more productive when they can quickly and easily access authorized resources. Because so many academic and research libraries are accustomed to using Athens for a single sign-on, it was essential for Endeavor to create a comprehensive interaction between ENCompass and Athens,” said Sara Randall, Endeavor Director of Strategic Products. “Endeavor continues to look for opportunities to ensure ENCompass is the most accessible, advanced and appropriate federated search system available to academic and research libraries worldwide. Adding functionality for the integration with Athens is one of the steps Endeavor is taking to ensure ENCompass meets the global needs of libraries.”
ENCompass is a complete solution for integrated end user searching across multiple data types and databases. ENCompass provides the tools to maximize the power of the library's collection, whether local or remote. With integrated simultaneous access to a variety of resources, the ability to organize library resources, and the ability to create and manage local digital assets, ENCompass provides federated search and discovery, linking, collection management, license and rights management and object management.
