Ex Libris today announced that the Oak Ridge National Laboratory's Research Library has signed a contract to purchase ALEPH 500™ as its next generation library management system, together with MetaLib® as its information portal. ORNL will be configuring its new ALEPH system for 15 staff users and 40 public users. ALEPH will replace the Library's current BASIS Techlib system. The ORNL Research Library is already a customer of SFX®, Ex Libris' award-winning context-sensitive linking solution. ORNL plans to implement MetaLib first, followed immediately by an implementation of ALEPH 500.
According to Bob Conrad, ORNL Library Director, “Our desire for an open system based on industry standards that would easily integrate with Oak Ridge National Laboratory's computing and information infrastructure was a key reason for selecting ALEPH 500 and MetaLib. It is also important to our library staff to select a library system that is a powerful, yet easy-to-use research tool for our researchers. We have been very pleased with the SFX product and customer support, and we believe ALEPH 500 and MetaLib will help move the library to another level of service and allow us to take advantage of future innovations.”
The ORNL Research Library comprises both a Central Research Library and an Environmental Sciences Library, serving the employees of ORNL across the Oak Ridge reservation in Oak Ridge, TN. The two libraries, each with its own area of specialization, form an interrelated system that enables researchers to have access to a broad spectrum of scientific and technical information. The Libraries combined have subscriptions to 3,800 journal titles, including over 1,000 full-text electronic journals, 77,000 books, and 250,000 technical reports in paper and over 1 million reports on microfiche.
In addition to ORNL, other United States national laboratories that are Ex Libris customers include Lawrence Berkeley National Laboratory, Lawrence Livermore National Laboratory, Los Alamos National Laboratory, Pacific Northwest National Laboratory, and Sandia National Laboratories.
