MINNEAPOLIS, MN, April 20, 2004 – Sagebrush Corporation announces its new online MARC record database, Sagebrush MARC Source, which helps simplify and reduce the time it takes to enter MARC records into automation systems. The online database allows access to hundreds of thousands of high-quality MARC records that can be copied directly into collections through a Z39.50 client or a Web search.

“MARC Source is filled with rich and complete MARC Records, all professionally cataloged to the highest industry standard by dedicated Sagebrush librarians,” said Jim Zicarelli, Sagebrush CEO. “With MARC Source, the need for original cataloging will be greatly reduced, giving media specialists more time to spend working with students and educators.”

At the core of MARC Source is the comprehensive Dewey/Sears database, which contains over 700,000 K-12 focused titles. This database, a Sagebrush exclusive that originated in 1965 as an alternative to the Library of Congress, includes Dewey call numbers, Sears subject headings, Library of Congress Subject Headings, summaries, annotations, interest levels, and paperback book records, as well as Spanish titles, hardcover and library binding records.

The number one reason schools use Sagebrush's K-12 focused Dewey/Sears database is that it offers quality records for materials often not cataloged by traditional sources, such as paperback books, series books and other K-12 materials. In addition, the Dewey/Sears database greatly simplifies subject headings and enables easier retrieval of MARC records. As a result, patrons have an easier time of searching for and locating appropriate resources when searching the library catalog.

MARC Source is available on an annual subscription basis and is compatible with Sagebrush Accent, Sagebrush Athena, Sagebrush Spectrum, Follett, and any automation system that supports the MARC 21 format (a Web-browser is required).
