ORLANDO, Fla.-June 26, 2004-Dynix, the world's leading provider of automation technologies, solutions, and services for libraries, today announced the launch of Horizon Information Portal 4.0, another feature-rich release of the company's industry-leading catalog and portal solution. The launch of Horizon Information Portal 4.0 will be accompanied by the release of Horizon 7.4, the newest build of the company's premiere ILS system. Both products are scheduled for general availability during the third quarter of 2004.

Horizon Information Portal 4.0 raises the bar for customization among online catalogs by enabling users to personalize their portal by highlighting items belonging to a specified location whenever they search. Default notification type and pickup locations can be determined for request placement. Libraries can choose to offer content channels which have been predefined or they can create their own channels based on unique local needs, conveniently enhancing the portal experience for users. Using portal technology, users only have to authenticate themselves once while searching the library's various online databases.

Horizon Information Portal 4.0 helps users improve search results through the use of Intelligent Search Assistance technology, which includes a spell checker and thesaurus. When search terms are spelled incorrectly, Horizon Information Portal leads users toward the correct spelling. A thesaurus helps users expand their search queries by suggesting alternate terms. Additionally, users can create a list of search areas in which they are interested and receive weekly, bi-weekly, or monthly email alerts to inform of new titles and resources.

"We are extremely excited about the launch of Horizon Information Portal 4.0, which unquestionably provides the most powerful search tools and the most intuitive and customizable interface ever available to library users," said Dynix Vice President of Product Development Steven Nielsen. "I believe this product will set a new standard for the ultimate user experience among online library catalogs."

Horizon Information Portal 4.0 provides users with an advanced level of language support, including localized user interfaces for English, Spanish, and French Canadian. Full product localizations are supported through localization toolkits for French, Simplified Chinese, Traditional Chinese, Thai, German, Arabic, Polish, Greek, Hungarian, Portuguese, Swedish, Dutch, and Welsh. Additionally, the product is supported by today's popular browsers, including the latest editions of Internet Explorer, Netscape, Safari, and Mozilla.

LDAP support is also provided in Horizon Information Portal 4.0, giving libraries the ability to authenticate users against an existing LDAP directory, providing integration with existing Academic or community LDAP directories.

Horizon Consolidated Searching, an add-on product designed for Horizon Information Portal, allows users to search the library catalog and all electronic resources with a single search query, leading to faster search times and a streamlined research experience. To deliver Horizon Consolidated Searching, Dynix has partnered with WebFeat to create translators that search multiple sources simultaneously and are compatible with more than 3,000 online databases. With Horizon Consolidated Searching, search results are displayed in Horizon Information Portal as a single result set, providing users with a convenient choice of resources.

Horizon Enriched Content, another add-on product available for Horizon Information Portal, adds new dimension to traditional bibliographic data by providing increased visual and intellectual appeal through cover art, tables of contents, author biographies, and sample chapters. Users are also provided access to book reviews, summaries, and related titles.

Horizon 7.4

Release 7.4 of the Horizon Information Management System provides the database support necessary for running Horizon Information Portal 4.0 and provides advanced functionality for users to set personal preferences in the Horizon database.

Through Horizon 7.4's interaction with Horizon Information Portal 4.0, users will be able to view a list of the top circulating books, in library-defined categories, such as classical literature, politics, or young adult fiction. Users will also be able to view a list of the library's newly acquired titles.

Building on the open architecture of HIP 4.0, Horizon 7.4 allows multiple Horizon databases in a consortium to communicate with a single Horizon Information Portal implementation, greatly simplifying the administration of multiple-database libraries.

As another result of this database support, Horizon 7.4 provides library staff and users with an enhanced display of authority notes within Horizon Information Portal 4.0. The enhanced display applies to any browse search of Authority Headings and will provide staff users with a summary results list that shows "public notes" in MARC authority records.

Both Horizon Information Portal 4.0 and Horizon 7.4 will be in general availability from Dynix during the third quarter of 2004. Individuals interested in purchase information or a demonstration of the product should contact their Dynix sales consultant or call 1-800-288-8020.
