MARKHAM, Ontario and SOUTHBOROUGH, MA, June 14, 2004 - Geac(R) (TSX:GAC, NASDAQ:GEAC), a global enterprise software company for Business Performance Management, announced that Kingston Frontenac Public Library (KFPL) in Kingston, Ontario (www.kfpl.ca), has purchased Geac's Vubis Smart library automation system. KFPL becomes the first North American customer for Vubis Smart, Geac's innovative, Web-based library management system, which has gained considerable market acceptance in Europe over the past year. The sale to KFPL marks the beginning of Geac's launch of Vubis Smart in the United States and Canada.
"The launch of Vubis Smart demonstrates a major re-commitment of Geac to the library management solutions market in North America - and a significant new generation of product offerings from Geac," said Ellen Isaacson, North American General Manager, Geac Library Solutions. "Our agreement with the Kingston Frontenac Public Library is validation of our focus and dedication to this important market."
KFPL selected Vubis Smart to manage its Digital Kingston project, a community-based project whose objective is to make information - both historical and current - about the Frontenac, Lennox and Addington and Kingston regions available in digital format. The Digital Kingston partners include the Ontario Genealogical Society-Kingston Branch, Pittsburgh Historical Society, Kingston and District Community and Information Centre, City of Kingston, Kingston Frontenac Public Library, Queen's University Libraries and Queen's University Archives, and Kingston Area Museums.
Vubis Smart enables the loading and indexing of KFPL's digital records and stores the records in formats best suited to their data origin, such as Dublin Core. Vubis Smart will also facilitate storage of digital images and multi-media for several local data resources including newspaper indexes from the 1800's, books on local architecture, and council meeting minutes, among others. These multiple databases of varying formats are searchable through a single search interface, which provides relevant links to other local and remote databases, online subscription databases and associated Internet links based on the search performed by the user.
"Geac's Vubis Smart is the most innovative and flexible system for managing data in a variety of formats," said Lester Webb, Systems and Technical Services Manager, Kingston Frontenac Public Library. "We are confident that Vubis Smart will enable us to provide excellent access and service to our customers."
