Abstract: Endeavor Information Systems announced the availability of the ENCompass Outbound XML Search API, an application programming interface to provide a mechanism for institutions and vendors to build their own XML gateways to the ENCompass system for managing, searching and linking collections.

DES PLAINES, ILLINOIS, May 18, 2004: Endeavor Information Systems announced today the availability of the ENCompass Outbound XML Search API, an application programming interface (API) to provide a mechanism for institutions and vendors to build their own XML gateways to the ENCompass system for managing, searching and linking collections. The ENCompass Outbound XML Search API provides a standard method for ENCompass and other data providers to exchange search requests and responses using XML technology. The ENCompass Outbound XML Search API is available now with ENCompass release 3.5.

Allowing End Users Access to More Resources

The ENCompass Outbound XML Search API provides new opportunities for libraries and library vendors to share information with end-users. Library vendors, such as publishers or database providers, can take advantage of the ENCompass Outbound XML Search API to rapidly develop XML gateways to their collections of content, allowing access to more resources through ENCompass. ENCompass customer libraries can take advantage of the ENCompass Outbound XML Search API to develop an XML gateway to local databases, such as dissertation collections or grey literature databases, that can be logically accessed through a federated search. Both activities will provide end-users federated searching of previously unsearchable data or data that was not consistently available through a Z39.50 search.

With the ENCompass Outbound XML Search API, libraries and vendors have a standard, documented solution for providing access to journal information through an ENCompass federated search. The Outbound XML Search API provides a stable mechanism for exchanging search requests and responses between ENCompass and other data providers using XML. The public API benefits end-users with search results that include qualified and well-defined information. Using XML for data exchange gives ENCompass libraries more control over what is searched, what information is returned in response, and how it is formatted. Libraries will benefit with a higher profile for information gathering and more usage for their investments in local and commercial resources.

Building on Endeavor's Technology Leadership

The ENCompass Outbound XML Search API builds on Endeavor's previous experience in developing proprietary XML gateways for federated searching through ENCompass, including XML gateways to PubMed, Scirus® and ScienceDirect®. Endeavor recommends XML gateways for federated searching of non-MARC data instead of the Z39.50 standard because of the reliability of the XML technology designed for federated search and retrieval of non-bibliographic information.

With no limitations on how many resources can be searched and no set limitations on returned search results, ENCompass is an extremely flexible and open system that meets the needs of today's researcher. ENCompass provides complete access to library-qualified information, plus the resources of a networked world in a single search.

“A testament to the ENCompass open architecture, the ENCompass Outbound XML Search API empowers libraries with the flexibility to incorporate any local collections, providing the availability for federated searching of even more resources. By developing this API for ENCompass, Endeavor is opening the opportunity to any library to extend access to their content through ENCompass,” said Sara Randall, Endeavor Director of Strategic Products.

“Endeavor set a precedent in federated searching with the first inclusion of XML gateways in our ENCompass federated search system; we continue to demonstrate our technological leadership with this first XML-based search API. The development of the ENCompass Outbound XML Search API is another example of Endeavor's strong leadership in digital technologies that directly benefits libraries,” said Marianne Parkhill, Endeavor Vice-President of Marketing. “Endeavor takes this positive step as an advanced library systems vendor to share this development work with institutions as well as publishers. Vendor and local institutional resources will be more accessible, which enables the libraries to benefit library users who will have better search results and will recognize the library as a storehouse of useful and accurate information.”

Current ENCompass customers interested in obtaining more information about the ENCompass Outbound XML Search API can contact Endeavor Customer Support at support@endinfosys.com. Publishers or database vendors interested in learning more about the development of XML gateways with Endeavor's ENCompass Outbound XML Search API should contact Harry Samuels, Endeavor Product Manager, Digital Library Integration Systems.
