Abstract: OCLC PICA and Dynix announced today a program of technical cooperation that will enhance the open systems interoperability between their systems and services in the European library community.

LEIDEN, The Netherlands and PROVO, Utah -- January 23, 2004 -- OCLC PICA and Dynix announced today a program of technical cooperation that will enhance the open systems interoperability between their systems and services in the European library community.

The technical cooperation focuses on the seamless interaction between Dynix local systems incorporating the Horizon Information Portal (HIP) and the OCLC PICA Central Bibliographic System (CBS) used in many European countries and regions for the management of bibliographic union catalogues. Development teams in both organizations will utilize common international standards for the interaction between the systems. Dynix and OCLC PICA will cooperate in joint testing between their systems to ensure effective interoperability between them.

The initial priority for the joint program is to facilitate end-user access to OCLC PICA national and global bibliographic resources including the union catalogues of GBV, Hebis and DDB, the GGC (Dutch Union Catalogue), and OCLC WorldCat through pre-configuration of these resources in the Horizon Information Portal.

Another key priority is to exploit the link from the bibliographic records in the OCLC PICA CBS to the local catalogue using the Horizon Information Portal as the front-end user interface in order to get circulation status information. This will increase the efficiency of regional, national and international inter-library loans.

Through this program, both Dynix and OCLC PICA confirm their support of international standards and open systems, to enable libraries and their end users to increase efficiency and improve access to European resources and scholarship.
