January 6, 2004-Boston-Ex Libris is pleased to announce that, less than 3 years after the debut of SFX(tm), it has now signed its 500th customer, Indiana University. The Indiana University contract covers the entire Indiana University system, including the flagship campus in Bloomington and its seven other campuses:
- Indiana University, Bloomington
- Indiana University, East
- Indiana University, Fort Wayne
- Indiana University, Kokomo
- Indiana University, Northwest
- Indiana University, South Bend
- Indiana University, Southeast
- Indiana University-Purdue University Indianapolis (IUPUI)
(IUPUI -Indiana University-Purdue University of Indianapolis, the second largest component of the IU system after the Bloomington campus-was among the original core group of SFX beta-sites in 2000/2001 and has been running SFX since that time. IUPUI has also recently purchased MetaLib on its own behalf.)
Indiana University is a major player in the library and information community. A member of the Association of Research Libraries and the Digital Library Federation, Indiana University has a full-time equivalent enrollment of 99,100 students on its eight campuses.
According to Suzanne Thorin, Ruth Lilly University Dean of University Libraries, and Phyllis Davidson, Director of Information Technology, "Indiana University Libraries are pleased to be a new customer for Ex Libris' SFX linking product. With the increasing use of electronic journals and databases by our users, tools such as SFX have become critical in providing access, and linking to and from, electronic resources within a defined IU context. Our Indianapolis (IUPUI) campus was an early beta site for SFX, and we are pleased to offer the same service to the rest of our Indiana University users. After evaluating a number of products, we felt that SFX, given Ex Libris' market penetration and leadership, plus their large ARL and consortium customer base, was the best choice for us."
With this milestone agreement the Committee on Institutional Cooperation-the academic consortium of the Big Ten universities plus the University of Chicago-is taking on more and more of an Ex Libris flavor. Six of the seven CIC member institutions* that have selected commercially developed link resolvers have now selected SFX.
