Abstract: Ex Libris and the National Library of China inaugurated the Ex Libris ALEPH 500 integrated library system at a distinguished acceptance ceremony in Beijing.

November 11, 2003—Beijing—Ex Libris and the National Library of China inaugurated the Ex Libris ALEPH 500 integrated library system at a distinguished acceptance ceremony in Beijing. The event was attended by Ms. Liu Xiaoqing, Deputy Director of the Bureau of Social Culture and Library in the Chinese Ministry of Culture; Mr. Yang Bingyang, Acting Director of the National Library of China; Mr. Matti Shem-Tov, President and CEO of Ex Libris; and Mr. Marc Daubach, Vice President of International Sales for Ex Libris.

Mr. Yang Bingyang and Mr.Shem-Tov kicked off the ceremony by clicking the ALEPH “Start” button. Mr. Yang followed with his address, in which he expressed his satisfaction with the successful cooperation between Ex Libris and the National Library of China and his hope that this close cooperation would continue.

The ALEPH system will serve to revolutionize the National Library of China in many ways. Whereas patrons previously had to physically seek out requested items and wait for their delivery in the 17-story library, today they can conduct all library business through the system's Web OPAC. With the integration of the ALEPH system, National Library of China patrons now have Web access to holdings in the more than 100 languages represented in the library's collections.

Congratulating the National Library of China on the successful adoption of the new library information system, Ms. Liu commented that she hoped the ceremony would lead to further cooperation and cultural communication between the two countries and peoples.

“Ex Libris is privileged that the National Library of China, the largest library in Asia, has chosen to become a prominent member of the ALEPH family,” stated Mr. Shem-Tov in his address. The National Library of China takes its place among a large number of national libraries running ALEPH. The acceptance ceremony was widely covered by the Chinese media.
