"We wanted to take advantage of client/server technology and provide staff with a graphic interface," said Library Director Steven Bell. "We also wanted to offer our faculty and students the new features available through Horizon Information Portal." As part of its new system, Philadelphia University will offer users the benefit of Enriched Content searching, which supplies cover art, author biographies, tables of contents, book reviews, and chapter excerpts.
"For staff, we really needed to move away from command-style interfaces," Bell said. "Horizon will simplify training for our student staff, which is especially important because of the high turnover rate that is characteristic of a student-based working environment."
Additionally, Bell said that Philadelphia University has enjoyed the level of support received from Dynix. "They are good and helpful whenever we've needed some assistance," he said.
With an enrollment of 3,500 students, Philadelphia University maintains an average student-to-faculty ratio of 12:1. The school's library circulates 33,000 items annually from a collection of 107,000 volumes.
