Abstract: Ex Libris announced that Cranfield University, including the Royal Military College of Science, will be implementing the market-leading MetaLib and SFX products.

Automated library-system developer Ex Libris is pleased to announce that Cranfield University, including the Royal Military College of Science, will be implementing the market-leading MetaLib and SFX products.

A library-led analysis of the way in which Cranfield staff and students access information indicated that one of the major challenges faced by the University is the management of the content of the library`s Web pages. The study demonstrated a need for a system that would facilitate management of the dynamic areas of the Web pages, particularly those that provide access to electronic resources.

The University felt that a portal solution that allowed cross-database searching, context-sensitive linking to full text, and a flexible, user-friendly interface would be ideal. The solution that Cranfield ultimately chose was MetaLib and SFX from Ex Libris.

The Information Systems Manager at Cranfield University, Simon Bevan, commented, “SFX will enable the University to gain a better return on the huge investment in electronic resources and will allow far more ‘joined-up' literature searching. The retrieval of the ‘appropriate copy' means not only the retrieval of electronic full text, abstracts, and tables of contents but also the discovery of print holdings within the library, often overlooked in today's environment.”

Cranfield University expects the MetaLib software's ability to simultaneously search heterogeneous e-resources, which previously had to be searched individually, will ease the burden on staff and students who are seeking relevant information. Another key feature provided by MetaLib is the arrangement of resources in logical subject categories. This arrangement helps users obtain direct access to native interfaces when necessary.

Simon Bevan added, “Thus far, our dealings with Ex Libris have been excellent. It is good to deal with a professional sales team and a knowledgeable, technically skilled, and responsive training team that is sympathetic to our ambitious implementation timetable.”

Ex Libris (UK) Managing Director Julie Booth noted, “We are delighted to welcome Cranfield to the growing family of MetaLib and SFX clients. Our products are well tested in multi-campus environments and will deliver an excellent solution to the University.”
