Abstract: VTLS announces the selection of Virtua by the American Public University System, which includes three member institutions: American Public University, American Military University and American Community College.

Blacksburg, VA. VTLS announces a new sale to the American Public University System (APUS), a non-traditional, distance education system that uses the most current technology to deliver personal, individualized instruction to a remotely located student body of over ten thousand. Headquartered in Charlestown, West Virginia, APUS includes three member institutions: American Public University, American Military University and American Community College. All three institutions will use Virtua's Cataloging and OPAC modules and allow students to access library information remotely. The system will be hosted by VTLS at the Blacksburg, Virginia headquarters.

“Through a unique blend of universally accessible distance-learning technologies and student-centered teaching techniques, we are able to intellectually challenge each individual while minimizing the distance between professor and student,” says Susan Hyland, Director and Librarian of APUS' Online Research Center. “Virtua helps us to continue to improve our administrative and teaching methods, as well as allow our students to access the information they need to be successful and accelerate in their development.”

VTLS further enhances APUS' goals by offering the hosting service to the university's library. Operated from VTLS offices, the service relies on the Internet to deliver the software applications, eliminating the need for local servers at customer sites and the expense involved in maintaining them. Currently, VTLS Inc. is hosting a rapidly growing number of systems, which are currently evenly divided between Virtua ILS accounts and imaging accounts.

“VTLS is, once again, on the move in North America as demonstrated by APUS selection of Virtua,” said Carl Grant, President and COO of VTLS. “We understand that distance education is an important part of the future of ILS systems and we're extremely pleased to have been selected by APUS to be their solution partner in delivering distance education. Also, because this is a hosted solution, it further demonstrates the whole concept of distributing not only the learners, but also the university-selected tools used to support the distance education program.”
