Atlantis Srl, the Italian distributor of Ex Libris products, is pleased to announce that the Italian Chamber of Deputies has signed a contract for the ALEPH 500 integrated library management system. The Chamber of Deputies is one of two houses of the Italian parliament, and its library serves the members and staff of the Chamber as well as the public.
Ex Libris won the contract through an extremely competitive tender process, in which ALEPH 500 emerged as the best match for the technical requirements that will satisfy the Library`s current and future needs. ALEPH 500 will go into production at the beginning of 2004. Atlantis has already begun to train the library staff and convert the bibliographic and administrative data, created with the Library`s DOBIS/LIBIS system, to the UNIMARC standard.
About the Library of the Chamber of Deputies
The Library of the Chamber of Deputies was established in Turin, Italy, in 1848. Later it moved to Florence, the capital of the Kingdom of Italy, and then to the Palazzo Montecitorio in Rome. In 1986, when the Montecitorio premises had become too small, the Library moved to Palazzo del Seminario. From that time on, researchers have been welcome to access the Library`s collections.
Initially housing 8,000 volumes, the Library now holds approximately one million volumes and about 10,000 serial publications.
With its mandate to support the Chamber`s parliamentary activities, the Library has extended its scope to law, history, political and social sciences, and economics. The legislative and parliamentary collections of other countries and publications of international organizations receive special attention. In addition, the Library contains collections of ancient and rare books that date back to the fifteenth century. Of particular significance is the Kissner collection, whose 2,000-odd books and engravings about Rome were published between the sixteenth and nineteenth centuries.
The Library of the Chamber of Deputies plays an important role in documentation activities and bibliographic research in the legal sciences both in Italy and abroad. Home of several legislative databases, the Library is responsible for updating a number of bibliographic legislative databases.
