June 18, 2003 – Chicago – Ex Libris (USA) announced today that the South Dakota Library Network, SDLN, has selected the Ex Libris suite of products of ALEPH, and MetaLib / SFX to replace their existing PALS system and to support their mission of providing cutting edge access to library and information resources for the citizens of South Dakota. The new system will support approximately 4,000,000 bibliographic records, 5,500,000 item records, and 250,000 registered patrons.
Librarians and IT staff across South Dakota conducted a thorough review of several software packages available in the marketplace before selecting the Ex Libris suite of products. By an overwhelming margin, Ex Libris was chosen. “Our users determined that Ex Libris was the best choice to meet our demanding requirements and to facilitate our move forward in the rapidly changing world of library automation. Ex Libris' suite of products will not only allow staff of our member libraries to maintain and expand access to their collections but also facilitates the integration of our electronic resources,” said Gary Johnson, Director of Operations for SDLN.
“We are delighted and honored to be selected by the South Dakota Library Network. The flexible yet comprehensive nature of ALEPH, MetaLib and SFX accommodate the most sophisticated of scenarios, from single libraries to shared systems and consortia”, said Oren Beit-Arie, acting President of Ex Libris (USA). “The architecture of our products will enable SDLN to bring resources together in an approach that enables users to search, access, and retrieve them seamlessly across the entire system.”
With implementation of the new system under way, SDLN, another statewide consortium, continues to show yet again that Ex Libris is the worldwide leader in the area of consortia solutions.
SDLN is a multi-type consortium funded through membership fees paid by participating libraries. It operates under an agreement among the South Dakota Department of Education, the State Library, and the South Dakota Board of Regents. SDLN is a non-profit organization governed by an Advisory Council composed of representatives from all member libraries. SDLN membership includes more than 60 academic, public, private, K12 school, tribal, medical, and government, libraries throughout the state of South Dakota.
