DES PLAINES, ILLINOIS, April 29, 2003: Endeavor Information Systems hosted over 900 academic and research library staff at the EndUser Group Meeting in Chicago this month. In addition to training and educational user presentations, the international customer group learned about digital futures from Keynote Speaker Roy Tennant, Manager, eScholarship Web and Services Design for the California Digital Library and well-known library industry speaker.
Recently named the recipient of the 2003 LITA/Library Hi Tech award for Outstanding Communication in Library and Information Technology, Tennant illustrated the need for convergence in library technologies. He challenged librarians to use technology advances to create library information centers that would help users find information in quick and logical methods. Tennant showed several examples of library catalogs that failed to assist users in easily finding information, and encouraged library staff to think like a user in order to provide outstanding user services in all aspects of the library.
Endeavor customers gave over 90 presentations to their peers covering such creative advances with Endeavor's systems as sending hold notice alerts to mobile phones, integrating multilingual OPACs in the Voyager ILS, and creating a campus portal with the ENCompass system for managing, searching and linking collections. Also informing attendees were 23 poster sessions that explained Endeavor customers' work with a variety of local workflows and procedures with Voyager and the LinkFinderPlus advanced linking system.
"The sharing of technology usage, library experiences, and best practices is a key benefit of the EndUser Meeting," said Linda Voyles, Endeavor Customer Relations Manager. "It's very exciting to learn from Endeavor users who are progressively working with Endeavor's software solutions and who are so excited to share their knowledge and experience with their peers. EndUser is a real chance for Endeavor's customer base to shine, demonstrating their talent, creativity and truly exceptional use of Endeavor's flexible, scalable systems at institutions that range from the largest library in the world to those libraries with just one staff member."
Held annually, the Endeavor User Group Meeting is attended by users of Endeavor's advanced library software solutions, including the Voyager integrated library management system, ENCompass digital system for managing, searching and linking collections, the LinkFinderPlus advanced linking system and all of Endeavor's systems. Organized by a volunteer committee of Endeavor customers, the five-day event includes pre-conference opportunities for additional product training from Endeavor's Customer Services division, an extensive update on the focus of Endeavor's direction for library software, and detailed customer presentations. The peer-to-peer presentations are targeted for beginning, intermediate or advanced users and are separated into interest areas such as Acquisitions & Serials, Cataloging, Technical, Small Library or Digital Tracks.
