Abstract: Dynix announced today the creation of a new NACO normalization authority loader for the Horizon Information Management System that will guarantee accuracy and reduce staff time spent in managing authority-controlled MARC records.

PROVO, Utah – April 10, 2003 – Dynix announced today the creation of a new NACO normalization authority loader for the Horizon Information Management System that will guarantee accuracy and reduce staff time spent in managing authority-controlled MARC records.

Created through collaboration with academic users of Horizon, the Horizon Authority Loader will allow a library to control how authorities are created and updated within its system. It uses algorithmic sequences built on NACO standards to normalize authority records during the importation and creation processes. NACO normalization is also used throughout the system for indexing, searching, and matching authority records.

Dynix has created the industry's most robust authority loader by introducing more options governing how the authority import works. In addition to NACO normalization, Horizon Authority Loader offers users complete validation control of use codes, the ability to determine when manual review is initiated, and the power to impose more sophisticated matching rules for additional accuracy.

The Horizon Authority Loader eliminates the duplication of records and ensures that authority data is reliable by eliminating human error. Additionally, staff time is made available for other technical workflows and user services.

“The Horizon Authority Loader will make sure that authority records in Horizon remain compliant with national standards,” said Anaclare Evans, systems librarian at the Detroit Area Library Network. “This kind of functionality is very important for any library that wants to preserve authorities as it found them in national databases.”

“We have custom built the Horizon Authority Loader for our academic libraries, but it adds important functionality for any library concerned with authority-controlled records,” said Dynix President and CEO Jack Blount. “This feature further expands Horizon's impressive functionality for academic libraries.”

The new feature will be included with Horizon 7.3, due for release later this year.

About NACO

NACO is a standard defined by the Library of Congress' Program for Cooperative Cataloging (PCC). The PCC is an international cooperative effort aimed at expanding access to library collections by providing useful, timely, and cost-effective cataloging that meets mutually-accepted standards of libraries around the world. NACO is the name authority program component of the PCC, and enables international program participants to contribute authority records for names, uniform titles, and series to the national authority file. NACO defines a common set of standards and guidelines when creating or changing authority records in order to maintain the integrity of a large shared authority file.
