Abstract: The Tunisian University Library Network, located in Tunis, recently signed a contract to purchase Virtua ILS - Integrated Library Systems to automate all six of its member universities.

Blacksburg, VA - The Tunisian University Library Network (Le Ministère de l'Enseignement Supérieur), located in Tunis, recently signed a contract to purchase Virtua ILS - Integrated Library Systems to automate all six of its member universities. In addition to the universities, two other specialized schools within the network, the Instituts Supérieurs d'Etudes Technologiques (ISET) and Instituts Supérieurs de Formation des Maîtres (ISFM), have also purchased Virtua.

"We chose Virtua because it is a superior system that fully supports both the French and Arabic languages through its Unicode® implementation," said Madame Zeineb Ben Ahmed, general manager of the Tunisian University Library Network.

The Tunisian University Library Network will acquire three separate Virtua systems that will provide access to more than 750,000 bibliographic records taken from 15 different databases. Some records have come from the French National Bibliography (BFN), while others have been locally produced. The bibliographic records will be converted into the UNIMARC format for the Network. The three Virtua databases will reside on SUN hardware. More than 150,000 students and staff will access the databases.

"It is wonderful to see that libraries are recognizing the research done by VTLS in the treatment of right-to-left languages," said Dr. Chachra, president of VTLS Inc. "Our implementation of Arabic is the best in the world. We are pleased to have yet another opportunity to create a stable and powerful Unicode-based, multilingual environment for libraries around the globe. We are particularly pleased that our entry into Tunisia comes with such a large and prestigious commitment by the Tunisian University Library Network."

The implementation of Virtua in French and Arabic is slated for later this year. Although the majority of Tunisia's population converses in Arabic, the onsite Virtua training will be conducted in French by one of VTLS' native French-speaking staff members.
