SYRACUSE, New York, January 24, 2003 - Gaylord Information Systems (GIS) announced today that EBSCO Information Services will use the Polaris® integrated library system to catalog titles for its NoveList™ database. NoveList is a reader's advisory service that helps patrons and staff in public and school libraries match reading preferences and interests to appropriate fiction titles.
The NoveList database contains over 100,000 titles, 75,000 full text reviews, and over 36,000 subject headings. Cataloging new fiction titles to add to the database is a large undertaking. NoveList was attracted to Polaris because of the sophistication of the cataloging subsystem, the flexibility provided by the relational database capabilities, and the search capabilities of the Polaris PowerPAC™.
The NoveList team creates and aggregates data from many sources. Bibliographic records are merged to create a single enriched record for each unique author/title. NoveList needed the flexibility to query, retrieve and change data for their enhanced records and Polaris' use of the SQL relational database provides them with the functionality they require. Polaris also provides NoveList with the ability to create ad hoc reports to see how data is grouped and inter-related, which helps in creating indexes for the MARC data. Finally, as NoveList works to enhance its value to library staff and patrons, the Polaris PowerPAC gives them a PAC environment in which they can analyze and quality check the NoveList data.
Della Coulter, manager of the cataloging team at NoveList, said, "In evaluating automation systems for NoveList's use, there were two 'tipping points' regarding the selection of Gaylord's Polaris system.
The structure of the system is very transparent, making it easy to use. The online help is candid and detailed about how component parts of the system are defined. For example, where there are defined decision tables involved in an operation, the help system shows you those decision tables so you can see exactly what's going on.
- The GIS staff have been willing consistently to work with the NoveList team on understanding and customizing the system for our particular, and unique, needs. They allowed us to work with the application and customize decision tables and reports for our use. And not least, they have been extremely patient during our extensive testing period."
- "NoveList's decision to purchase Polaris for their intensive, specialized cataloging needs is a testament to the unequaled power, flexibility, and customizability of our system," said GIS President Katherine Blauer. "EBSCO Information Services is a leader in the library industry and we are delighted to welcome them to the Polaris family of users."
Ranked number 1 in customer support*, the Polaris integrated library system facilitates all aspects of library operations by providing innovative workflow solutions packaged in a familiar Windows interface. The Polaris staff client offers a complete solution for acquisitions, collection management, cataloging, circulation, interlibrary loan and serials control. With its object-oriented design and integrated Z39.50 capabilities, Polaris avoids the artificial boundaries common to legacy systems built on a modular framework. It also avoids the costs and downtime associated with installing modules one piece at a time. The Polaris PowerPAC extends this innovation to the end-user by providing a fully customizable library portal to the library's catalog and other library resources, including enhanced bibliographic data such as book images, tables of contents, and reviews. With embedded metasearch capabilities, patrons can search the library's catalog, the web, other library catalogs and Z39.50 databases at one time using one common interface. Today more than 300 libraries use Polaris every day to serve the information needs of their communities.
