This was the week that was: Ex Libris delivers ALEPH across the globe

Ex Libris is proud to announce that six libraries in different parts of the world recently went live with the ALEPH 500™ system within an eight-day period: Australia`s Curtin University (July 1); Lancaster University, in the United Kingdom (July 3); and the University of Delaware (July 1), the University of Minnesota, Twin Cities (July 1), the State University of New York (SUNY) Cortland (July 3), and Harvard University (July 8), in the United States. Congratulations to all the library staff who worked so diligently with our project staff to prepare for a successful switch to production.

About the Universities

Curtin University of Technology ( is western Australia`s largest university with over 31,000 students. Among Curtin`s strengths are its international orientation, the responsiveness of its programs to national and workplace needs, and its promotion of cultural diversity and lifelong learning. Curtin offers over 850 undergraduate and postgraduate courses in business, engineering, health sciences, humanities, science, mining, and agriculture.

The University of Delaware ( has grown in to a major university from its founding as a small private academy in 1743. The University of Minnesota (, with its four campuses, is one of the most comprehensive institutions in the United States. A state land-grant university, Minnesota has a strong tradition of education and public service and is a major research center, with scholars of international reputation. The university`s ALEPH implementation is funded in part by MnLINK, a state-funded consortium of academic, government, K-12, public, and special libraries throughout Minnesota. This implementation represents the first of two ALEPH servers planned for in the MnLINK contract.

SUNY Cortland (, founded in 1868, currently has an enrollment of 5,700 undergraduate and 1,530 graduate students. Among its major goals is to customize the educational experience to meet the needs of each student. Technological education is a priority at Cortland; to further this end, the campus boasts 41 student computer labs, with 2,077 computers and more than 5,000 pieces of computer equipment.

Harvard University ( is the site of the oldest library in the United States and the largest academic library system in the world. Comprising more than 90 libraries—which serve a student body of approximately 19,000 and a faculty of over 1,500—Harvard Library holdings include more than 14.5 million books, as well as manuscripts, microforms, maps, slides, photographs, and other materials.

Lancaster University ( is one of Britain`s top universities, ranked first in northwest England by the Sunday Times (September 2001) and eighth nationwide out of 122 institutions rated by the Guardian University Guide (May 2001). Lancaster offers 300 undergraduate and 200 postgraduate degree courses. Open more than 77 hours a week, its library has over one million items and currently subscribes to nearly 3,000 journals. The services of the Lancaster library are user centered, in support of the school`s world-class research and excellent, innovative teaching.
