Blacksburg, VA - VTLS Inc. partners with SUN Microsystems to deliver a fully integrated solution that addresses the needs of K-12 libraries around the world. This system, Virtua SLE (Small Library Edition) - Scholastic is an all-in-one design that minimizes cabling and setup. By offering an integrated solution, libraries no longer have to deal with the complexity of purchasing and configuring hardware, database, and application software components.
"We feel this combination of Virtua SLE and Sun Microsystems’ Sun Ray and server technology offers primary and secondary schools the appropriate solution for their unique library needs," says Art Pasquinelli, Library Marketing Manager for Sun Microsystems states. "VTLS has succeeded in developing an affordable, scalable, and easy-to-use solution designed specifically for the requirements of the K-12 library. Our joint goal is to offer K-12 customers a state-of-the-art technical solution minus the hassles and complexity they have seen with standard PC installations."
Virtua SLE - Scholastic combines the powerful features that are often found in higher-end systems, with the simplicity and ease-of use that is essential to school libraries. The system can be implemented in K-12 libraries with five to fifteen simultaneous users.
| Level | User Level | Bibs | Items | Patrons |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| Red | 5 | 25,000 | 125,000 | 5,000 |
| Blue | 10 | 50,000 | 250,000 | 10,000 |
| Green | 15 | 75,000 | 375,000 | 15,000 |
The application software mirrors all the flexible and powerful features of Virtua ILS - Integrated Library Systems including the smart Virtua Staff Client that configures itself just upon login, removing unnecessary functional and display items and allowing librarians to concentrate only on the task at hand. The Chameleon Gateway allows libraries to completely decide how their online catalog will be viewed and searched by their students. Through "skin "technology, the library can have multiple interfaces (icon or textual driven) that are appropriate for the reading levels and search capabilities of students throughout the range of grades that your library services.
Virtua SLE -Scholastic utilizes the latest technology from Sun Microsystems through the use of the Sun Blade Workstation and the Sun Ray Information Appliances. Since Sun Ray Internet appliances are "stateless", no setup is required. The system comes enabled with Smart Card technology, allowing users to access their sessions from any desktop unit.
"Running upon the Sun Blade/Sun Ray system, and utilizing the Oracle RDBMS, Virtua SLE -Scholastic is strongly distinguished from other available systems by its architectural design and its key technologies," said Vinod Chachra, President, VTLS Inc. "While the system supports all traditional library functions, the combination of database management systems, three-tiered client server architecture, stateless OPAC design, object-oriented application design, Unicode support, along with flexible networking support, makes Virtua SLE -Scholastic a clear leader in the K-12 market."
