Press Release: Inmagic, Inc. [May 23, 2000]

Thesaurus, improved scripting capabilities are highlights of Inmagic's newly released DB/TextWorks Version 4.1

Woburn, MA. Inmagic, Inc., a leading developer of library automation and information management software solutions, today announced the release of DB/TextWorks Version 4.1, designed for information management on desktops and networks. This version of the 32-bit flexible text management package includes a thesaurus as well as improved scripting capabilities.

Inmagic also announced a maintenance program that is designed to provide customers with a steady stream of new features and benefits throughout the year.

DB/TextWorks 4.1 features

The star feature of DB/Text Version 4.1 is the much-requested thesaurus. The thesaurus' data model contains lots of great features, including the ability to:

  • Find the preferred term
  • Institute preferred terms (for example, General Motors instead of GM)
  • Refine a search by using the hierarchy and synonym structure
  • Compile scope notes (used to define a term or clarify exceptional usage)
  • Use textbase tools to design a report
The thesaurus was designed for ease of use. As a result, the user will be able to:
  • Browse and paste from the thesaurus while searching and editing
  • Maintain a thesaurus without leaving the catalog
  • Have reciprocity maintained automatically (If term A points to B, then term B must point to Term A)
  • Have a high degree of thesaurus integrity due to validation and error checking
  • Rebuild thesaurus relationships at any time with one click to reestablish broken links

"The thesaurus tool will add value to the content of our customers' databases because it will promote more precise and relevant searches," said Katie Blake, National Sales Manager of Trimagic Software, an authorized Inmagic dealer in Australia.

"Automating the process of creating and linking terms will allow the librarian to build a more readily searchable database, and the creation of those linked terms will help the end user avoid floundering around in an uncontrolled search.

"The thesaurus feature will be a real boon for both librarians and end users."

DB/TextWorks Version 4.1 will also make it easier to link to external resources (such as vendor Web sites) because it can be configured to recognize embedded URLs and e-mail links and convert them into live hyperlinks in reports.

Scripting

DB/Textworks Version 4 introduced a scripting capability that allowed users to add mini programs which permitted them to automate repetitive tasks, perform enhanced functions, or customize the product to better meet their needs.

Version 4.1 includes more potent scripting capabilities. For example, many of the menu commands can be invoked from within a script. The software will behave just as if the user selected that command from a menu.

It will also be possible for the script to pass parameters to some of the menu commands. For example, it will be possible to export the records in a set to a file without bringing up the dialog box that asks for the file name.

Other scripting capabilities are being added, such as the ability to react when the focus enters or leaves the box.

These improvements mean that the script developer will be better able to leverage the power and potential of DB/TextWorks. And the end user will discover that more powerful scripts means it takes less effort to accomplish a task.

Maintenance Program

The maintenance program will allow customers to receive releases on a more timely basis as well as make it easier for them to put together their yearly budgets.

"In today's information economy, organizations are moving and changing so rapidly we feel it is vital to get product enhancements to customers as fast as possible," said Phillip Green, President and CEO of Inmagic, Inc.

"With the maintenance program, we can be more responsive to changes in the market, and our customers can receive a steady stream of new features throughout the year."

The products moving to the maintenance program include:

  • DB/TextWorks
  • DB/Text for Libraries
  • DB/Text WebPublisher Lite
  • DB/Text WebPublisher
