HUNTSVILLE, Ala. (June 16, 2000) The Jersey City Free Public Library System, which serves the residents of New Jersey's second largest city, has selected Sirsi Corporation's Unicorn Library Management System to provide a Web-based catalog and services for its users. The Unicorn system will be installed and maintained by Library Systems and Services, LLC (LSSI), a management company hired by the Jersey City Free Public Library Board of Library Trustees to manage all library operations. According to Allan Kleiman, senior automation librarian for LSSI and the Jersey City Free Public Library System, "Unicorn was chosen because of its flexibility and user-friendliness. And because it is fully integrated, the modules flow together well."
Established in 1889, the Jersey City Free Public Library today has a main library, eleven branches and a bookmobile that serve approximately 80,000 registered borrowers. The main library, still housed in the original 1901 building, provides a collection of popular works, reference services, literacy programs, and a New Jersey Reading Room with local histories, directories, legal codes, official documents, early and current maps, pictures and a dedicated computer for New Jersey job seekers. After the Unicorn system is installed in June, the library will provide World Wide Web access to its holdings and other resources through SIRSI's WebCat Online Public Access Catalog.
All aspects of Jersey City Free Library operations, including the Unicorn installation, are managed by LSSI, Kleiman noted. "This outsourcing arrangement works well because LSSI has more than 20 years of experience in library management of all types, from automation to daily operations. If the need arises for someone with expertise in a particular area, we have immediate access to qualified specialists and consultants. We have a variety of resources that enable us to move projects along effectively," Kleiman explained.
SIRSI, the leader in library technology, is a privately held company founded in 1979, with headquarters in Huntsville, Ala. SIRSI uses the most advanced technology available to provide easy-to-use information systems for libraries, businesses and archives. With offices in major U.S. cities and subsidiaries in Australia, Canada, Latin America, the Middle East, the Peoples Republic of China and the United Kingdom, the company has established its Unicorn products as the leading client/server library information systems in the world.
