Boca Raton, FL, May 23, 2000 - Libraries of all sizes can now choose from three easy-to-use union catalogs available in the recently released Mandarin M3(TM) Library Automation System Version 1.1. M3 union catalogs eliminate duplicate purchases and redundant cataloging and enable multiple libraries to share resources and electronic records. In addition, M3 union catalogs offer users flexible MARC record searching capabilities.
Suitable for school, public, academic and special libraries, M3 is powered by a proprietary search engine specifically designed to search full MARC records. M3 not only conforms to the most advanced bibliographic and technological standards, its Windows functionality makes it highly navigable for users of all ages. Recognized by Media & Methods magazine as one of the year's top library technology products for K-12 schools, Mandarin M3 is compatible with Windows 98, 2000 and NT.
New to Mandarin M3: Union Catalog Hosting Service
Libraries seeking an easy, cost-effective way to share resources with other libraries will benefit from M3's new Union Catalog Hosting Service, which allows libraries to have their collections hosted and serviced at SIRS Mandarin's corporate office in Boca Raton, Florida. SIRS provides worry-free database maintenance and backups, saving libraries time and money. The Union Catalog Hosting Service enables libraries without Internet capabilities to maintain a current union catalog. Patrons with a Web browser and Z39.50-compliant sites can easily access library collections hosted by SIRS Mandarin.
Share Resources and Electronic Records with M3's Classic Merged Union Catalog
With M3's Classic Merged Union Catalog, all patron and holdings records are located in a centralized catalog. Not only does this feature save libraries time by automatically updating their local catalogs, it ensures that MARC record fields, such as author and subject headings, maintain a standard format. An easy-to-use OPAC helps users quickly target needed resources. Using the Classic Merged Union Catalog, individual libraries can easily download records from the union catalog collection, the Web or other sources. In addition, libraries can create their own records and add them to the union catalog. For libraries interested in detailed reports, individual and group statistics can be created using information supplied by the central server.
Scoping, a new feature of Mandarin M3, lets libraries limit record viewing capability to their own records, or determine the portions of the union catalog they wish to view. In addition, scoping provides libraries with increased record management capabilities. A major benefit of the Classic Merged Union Catalog's server/client architecture is that districts and library networks do not require servers at all branch sites, eliminating the need for server maintenance and reducing hardware costs.
Create a Union Catalog Using M3 Optional Modules
Mandarin M3 includes optional modules that enable libraries to place their collections on the Internet and search multiple library collections without restructuring their hardware network systems. Libraries using PC, Macintosh and UNIX computers can access union catalogs using M3 optional modules.
M3's ZServer (Z39.50 server) module allows a library to broadcast its catalog to the world. Resource sharing has become an integral part of library automation decision-making. With the ZServer module, anyone with Z39.50 client software and Internet access can view your collection. Libraries can also place their collections on the Internet using M3's intuitive Web Gateways. Web Gateways enable patrons with a Web browser to search Internet-based union catalogs 24 hours a day.
The M3 Web Gateway for Students and Adults allows students and patrons to locate one or multiple library collections on the Internet using three user-friendly search levels - Standard, Enhanced and Visual Catalog. The Web Gateway for Students and Adults instantly displays a results list with holdings, locations and item availability. Also included is an interlibrary loan request system and support for MARC field 856, which enables users to hyperlink to pre-selected websites.
The M3 Web Gateway for Children incorporates a colorful interface which makes searching online union catalogs fun and easy for primary school students. Hyperlinked subjects, authors and other fields help children find alternative pathways to resources.
