February 5, 1999. The Wellcome Trust Library and Information Services Institute, the world's largest medical research charity, has selected a Millennium library automation system, replacing a URICA library management system. The Trust, which includes the library of the Wellcome Institute for the History of Medicine, will begin implementation in the spring of 1999, and its new Millennium will go live the following summer.
"We chose Millennium after a detailed review of the systems currently marketed and supported in the United Kingdom," said Wellcome Librarian David Pearson. "In selecting Millennium, we were attracted by a product with mature and robust functionality that has been installed in many UK academic sites, backed by a company with an excellent track record for ongoing development. We are an unusual library in some ways, with particular concerns for opening up the research potential of our collections, and we have been impressed by the willingness of Innovative to meet our more specialized needs—such as delivering digitized images—without compromising the sound adherence to professional standards on which their system is based."
According to Mark Carden, general manager at SLS Information Systems, Innovative's European division: "Millennium was a natural choice for the Wellcome Institute, which has an extensive collection and complex cataloging and service requirements. Millennium's ability to index and present information in ways tailored to the needs of any institution is a major strength. Wellcome will also benefit from our JavaÔ -based graphical interface and Millennium's excellent electronic imaging capabilities."
Wellcome's Millennium will serve the Wellcome Trust's Information Service and Film & Video Library. An internationally renowned research library, the Institute library has holdings of more than 500,000 books, as well as extensive collections of manuscripts, archives, and pictorial materials.
