(Carlsbad, CA - January 8, 1998) - Electronic Online Systems (EOS) International announced today the release of the Q Series, its new Next Generation, fully-integrated, modular library information management system. Cataloging, Circulation, OPAC, Powersearch, a Web OPAC and System Setup began shipping in 1997. Modules for Serials and Acquisitions are planned for release in 1998.
A full featured library management system with exceptional technical services controls, the Q Series also features a sophisticated information retrieval system. The Q Series offers intuitive capabilities far beyond conventional search and retrieval systems. Its advanced searching technology is designed to overcome the limitations inherent in Boolean searching. The Q Series uses Natural Language Querying to allow patrons to search by simply entering a phrase or question. Its Concept Searching technology intuitively searches for synonyms (e.g. - England, United Kingdom & Great Britain), as well as antonyms and related and contrasting terms, providing successful search results despite user's unfamiliarity with catalog content. It forgives misspellings, returns search results ranked in order of relevancy, and allows "more like this" searches with its Query by Example capability. All of this is designed to provide faster response times and significantly improves the accuracy of searches.
"EOS International's presentation of the Q Series Online Public Access Catalog is truly visionary," said Linda Yoder, the Director of Nappanee Public Library in Nappanee, IN. "We have easy, user-friendly access to our collection in ways we never had before. The great part is [our patrons] don't need to know what a Boolean search is in order to use it.. .those wanting more [information] can choose concept and pattern searches. The screens are so easy to understand."
The Q Series incorporates Web technology designed to work in today's electronic world of the Internet, Intranets, Extranets, network computing, and electronic resources and publications. The Q Series shares a common user interface with Information Quest to provide online access to local library holdings along wit scientific, technical, medical and business electronic content in full-text format right at the desktop.
"The Q Series truly extends the information resources you have beyond the four walls of the library," said Scot Cheatham, CEO of EOS International. "Together wit Information Quest, it provides access to information regardless of its location. It illustrates EOS International's vision for using state-of-the-an technology to provide content, access and management of information to libraries worldwide."
The Q Series adheres to library information standards including Z39.2 (USMARC) with embedded MARC rules and validation, TCP/IP (for interconnectivity to the Internet), multimedia capabilities, and Year 2000 compliancy.
Employing an open, scalable, client/server architecture, the Q Series can support the needs of libraries with collections of any size. The Q Series client runs on Windows 95 or Windows NT Client, while the server uses the Windows NT Server and Sun UNIX operating systems. Other server versions are planned for release in 1998.
