SIRS Mandarin, Inc., a leading provider of turnkey library automation systems, has been awarded a contract to provide the SIRS Mandarin M3 Library Automation System to the Vigo County School Corporation in Terre Haute, Indiana.

According to Brenda Allen, Coordinator of Instructional Materials, a selection committee composed of media specialists, administrators and media center clerical staff evaluated five different library automation systems. SIRS Mandarin M3 was chosen for its networkability and ease of use. "We were looking for a system that would handle a Wide Area Network of 31 sites, a Union Catalog and a user-friendly screen which would accomodate K-12 students," said Allen.
The contract renews the partnership between SIRS Mandarin and Vigo County School Corporation, whose first experience with library automation was with Mandarin. "It was the most positive experience we have had to date," Allen said. "We had to leave (the system) because our school corporation networked using an AS400 system. Now we are back to SIRS Mandarin and happy to be here."
In addition to the SIRS Mandarin M3 core package, the Virgo County School Corporation has purchased retrospective conversion services for its collection of 450,000 holdings. The SIRS Mandarin M3 Web gateway, an intuitive interface that allows libraries to place their collections on the Internet, will also be installed in Vigo County schools. "As many of our classrooms have Macintosh computers, we wanted our catalog to be accessible from every classroom," Allen said.
Operational with Windows 95, 98 and NT platforms, M3 includes networkable software with unlimited site licensing, full Windows functionality, configurable circulation and cataloging features and a user-friendly multilingual OPAC. M3 incorporates a powerful proprietary, full MARC record search engine, as well as standard, enhanced and visual search interfaces which allow users to effectively target resources with little assistance from library staff.
